Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Interesting seeing the replies from the peanut gallery above. Really, how does anyone on this forum think it is any of their business how I sell my boat, how I price it, or what I pay for airfares...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Absolutely. There is an extreme project boat down the dock from me now covered in junk. Spoke to the 70 year old owner this morning and he admitted he has spent about $130,000 so far on the boat,...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Sorry Jim, but I must disagree. I am booking return international airfares for less than $200, but could easily spend that amount just on 3 days marina fees. I have spent over $90,000 on the boat...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

If someone takes the time to call me and ask questions about the boat or go and visit it, they are probably serious. If they submit a low offer by email without knowing anything about the boat they...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

The boat is in decent shape now, I am enjoying sailing it, and it is now just one hop from home, cheap marinas, cheap yards, and cheap labour, so yes, definitely worth keeping for a few years to...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

To avoid wasting everyone's time I told the broker I would only accept offers at the list price, and only from a buyer who had actually seen the boat and spoken to me about it, but the broker...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Yesterday I took the head off and removed all valves. No bent stems, no pitting on the valves or seats. Can't see anything that would cause white smoke. I will lap the valve seats and replace...

Re: My prop fell off... f.ck f.ck f.ck.

It may not help in this particular case, as there has already been good advice given, but if anyone wants to learn a bit about props, shafts, and keyways, I recommend checking out the Youtube.com...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Not sold, but have a few people wanting to inspect when I am back on the boat. The second broker left the brokerage yesterday, so I am now on number 3. High turnover is not a good sign.

Should...

Re: Are there any deserted islands like in the movies?

Unfortunately there are many countries claiming to own parts of Antarctica, and a small number of scientists in those countries who want to keep the continent for themselves, so the paperwork...

Re: Are there any deserted islands like in the movies?

There are tens (hundreds?) of thousands of deserted islands, but they are almost all claimed by one or more countries, so don't expect to avoid government regulation. If an island is deserted there...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

A major rebuild would be pulling the whole engine out of the boat along with crank shaft, cylinder sleeves etc and re-boring / grinding cylinders, head, valves, crank shaft etc. At the moment I am...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

The boat is now in Tipperary Waters Marina in Darwin. With an 8 meter tidal range the marinas all have locks, which was a new and rather stressful experience when solo on a big and not very agile...

Re: Looking for Shipwright Apprenticeship

Shipwright is a rather specialised job title for someone who probably has a very broad skillset. Many of the good shipwrights I have met started as house carpenters or cabinetmakers and then...

Re: Gold Coast Anti-fouling Locations

When I bought my boat in Sydney I got quotes from pretty much every yard between Sydney and Brisbane, and Boat Works came out by far the cheapest for haul and stand if you take their weekend and mid...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Now coming down the North Channel into Darwin in a 3 knot ebb current and expect to drop the anchor at midnight for the first time since Horn Island, and hopefully lock into a marina at high tide...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Now anchored off Horn Island, so I have reached the top and time to turn Left. Some fantastic tradewind sailing the last few days past many coral reefs and islands, especially today up from Escape...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Now dodging zig-zagging trawlers and cruise ships off Port Douglas in the dark. I should have sailed this stretch in daylight :(

Cruise ship discos really should not be allowed to use red lights....

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Arrogance ? I love how an anonymous person on the internet who has never met me or seen the before/after can judge. I am not trying to get the boat back to new condition, just get it working and...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Re: To Which Island Would You Sail?

Australia. Lots of varied geography, flora, fauna, and weather, and relatively few people and boats to spoil it.

The main downside is that it is relatively expensive, largely due to government...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

The potential buyers were on the boat today and we discussed the work done and the problems remaining. They plan to live aboard, fix the boat, and sail in Tasmanian waters, then probably sail back...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Got the engine back together today, but when I started it the idle was slow, could not achieve decent revs, ran rough, plenty of white smoke indicating unburned diesel. Played with the high pressure...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Total expended on the boat including original purchase price is somewhere between $110-120K. The first buyer who came along is offering $150,000. Broker takes 10% commission. 6 months hard work...

Re: Breaking All the Rules ...

Another drive plate arrived today, and this time it fits! Have now put the drive plate back on, bell housing on, new engine mounts on, engine aligned, gearbox on, and shaft bolted back on. Not fun...
