Re: Explanation for the Increase in Multihull Popularity

No No nick youv'e got it wrong. There was light winds that day so they decided to use the tide flowing over the sails to get an advantage. I bet a sundeer can't do that.

Re: Best Upwind , Blue Water Cat ?

Yes, but not very observant. Now look at the time I posted the link , and compare it to the time Highland fling posted the link, and then you will see where Mr Fling got the idea.:thumb::p

Re: Best Upwind , Blue Water Cat ?

These days it appears as though very few cruisers actually sail to windward in catamarans. Most don't enjoy it. Its uncomfortable. Its slow. its frustrating. With most modern cats fitted with a...

Re: Explanation for the Increase in Multihull Popularity

So are you claiming now you are not as fast as a volvo 70 and therefore you don't do minimum 250 mile days?

I'm confused.

You have posted links to Dashews cruising speeds before via...

Re: Explanation for the Increase in Multihull Popularity

No. You seem a little confused. Try rereading the posts. The average for the fully crewed volvo 70 was 257/day, ie 10.xx knots and nick is claiming 250 nm for his loaded short handed cruiser as a...

Re: Explanation for the Increase in Multihull Popularity

The increase in multihull popularity has little to do with speed, as there is now enough rally and race results out there to show a heavily laden, read "cruising trim", multi is no faster than a...

Re: Explanation for the Increase in Multihull Popularity

Thats funny, I just checked the BOM observations for North Head and you may find it was closer to 4-10 knots for the last couple of days.:thumb:

Re: Best Upwind , Blue Water Cat ?

Yes people are a little confused here between vmg and pointing ability. As we all know pointing high into a short steep sea is not necessarily the quickest route to a windward destination.

Re: Best Upwind , Blue Water Cat ?

Yes, totally correct. The Jervis bay sailing club in NSW has mixed fleet races with a smattering of seawinds and mono hulls competing even though they are listed in seperate divisions . The seawind...

Yes quite possibly sandcrab ,however the mark II had the streamlined, more modern looking cabin .

Re: Best Upwind, Blue Water Cat?

Nice find sand crab. Looks like a crowther 44 (deign 85) with 10 foot stern extensions. Stern extensions are a sign that the vessel is overloaded. This particular boat is around 40% heavier than the...

Re: Spirited 380 Lost in the Coral Sea

Just as a side question, will most peoples insurance companies cover one for a coral sea crossing in cyclone season, double handed, in a sailing cat, for a reasonable price? Mine doesn't.

Thanks irc, yes, the design is only half the equation. Seamanship is often forgotten. Still doesn't excuse the engine hatch design/location.

By the way I haven't managed to locate that image on...

For those interested here is a link to a "test" sail report. The word " test' is used with tongue planted firmly in cheek as it comes across as the typical powder puff swooning advertorial.

Re: Spirited 380 lost in the coral sea

Looks like the walk through transom doubles as the main CP drain. Always going to be wet in a following sea. Great feature for bay play though.
