Re: Another Hurth Identification

There can be several different gear reductions for a Hurth transmission. If all you need is the reduction, you can get rather close by turning the transmission input shaft by hand and counting how...

Re: series drogue size and count

The principal of the Jordan drogue is to reduce shock load assuming that not all cones will be in the water (and therefore loaded up at the same time). As you reduce the number of cones you are...

Re: series drogue size and count

I have read that report, I have built Jordan Series Drogues, I have deployed them. But again - on what basis is the first linked-to idea from Ocean Brake incorrect? Essentially the Ocean Brake...

Re: series drogue size and count

Again - what's your source that the table from post #1 is obviously wrong? Suggesting that Google will somehow tell me what's wrong is silly.

Re: series drogue size and count

One what basis would that publication be more or less accurate? Accurate than what? Opinion in the absence of fact is not too helpful...

Re: series drogue size and count

It appears you do not understand the problem the Jordan Series Drogue is trying to solve. You might do well by reading the original engineer's/designer's paper and that would answer your question as...

Re: Heading sensor?

That's a pretty broad question.

The best available today for a small boat is a laser ring gyrocompass, can be north of $100k.

Re: Who is a 'bluewater skipper'? What is 'bluewater preparation'?

It's a pretty simple definition in my book - coastal cruising means you can pick and choose the weather to move around in and plan to get back to a safe port if the weather deteriorates. Blue water...

Re: Is a 47ft boat with slab reefing too much for a couple compared to in mast furlin

I've had no problem as a singlehander doing slab reefing on a 45' IOR two tonner. I absolutely hate in-mast furling (if something goes wrong up there it's not accessible), with in-boom furling at...

Re: Using windlass resets the electronics

It's unclear if your instruments are dropping out due to low voltage (turning on the windlass) or a voltage spike (turning off the windlass).

Consider a DC-DC converter that will supply desired...

Re: Propeller -- Paint or Polish?

I put the Black Widow slippery paint on the bronze prop, cleaned and primed as per Petit's tech support guys and instructions. It lasted three months of use and then zero value after that. No value...

Re: C-MAP? or NAVIONICS?

Ideally you would like to have both on board with the ability to switch between them. I hate C-Map's fonts with thin black line surrounded by thick white border; makes it quite difficult to read...

Re: drive shaft stuffing box

It's unlikely that bronze keeper nut will have galled to the stuffing nut - could happen, but unlikely. So they shouldn't be welded together.

I have had significant corrosion on the threads the...

Re: What is your primary means of navigation (poll)

I use Coastal Explorer with various official hydrographic office raster and ENC charts running on the nav station laptop. C-Map electronic cartography for specific areas.

Secondary system are...

Re: Correct installation of backing plates under a sloped surface

You do want to take the plate and bolts off, mostly because the bolts won't have sealant in place when making the casting, and you'd also want to check the result to verify the work came out the way...

Re: Correct installation of backing plates under a sloped surface

The easiest way to create a perfect surface for a backing plate to rest up against the deck is to cast a thickened-epoxy surface in place. It's relatively easy and not messy if you're careful. ...

Re: Big $$$ Chartplotter or Computer App(s)

Depends on your cartography choice(s), access to replacement equipment (where are you sailing?), and where you intend to mount the equipment. Significant considerations for carrying a PC-only...

Re: Sailbag material--what to use

There are PVC-coated polyester fabrics used for outdoor things (patio covers, etc.). As stated above, I would go with a Sunbrella fabric for the cover (same fabric is normally used for the mainsail...

Re: Dragging my Rocna - Is my technique at fault?

As most everybody above states, 2:1 scope is NOT the time to be setting your anchor. Let out much more than that (5:1 ought to be good as you're using all-chain, or 7:1 if you want to set deeper),...

Re: The right fishing reel for sail cruising

I don't have a gun on board, and it's been difficult for me to manage a net and a fish all at the same time mostly because the boat is still running at 6-8 knots and that makes the net difficult to...

Re: The right fishing reel for sail cruising

I'm unaware of a distinction between fresh and salt fish - the fish still breathe through gills therefore I would expect fish to react the same way.

I've great success with vodka on: dorado/mahi...

Re: The right fishing reel for sail cruising

Ah - you go with light tackle. I use 400# monofilament 100 feet behind the boat, same donut for line storage, with a 1/4" bungee cord as the shock absorber. A coke can with a couple of nuts and...

Re: How to attach a Spinnaker Mast Band to the mast

Attach with structural solid rivets stainless steel set in a non-sieze material (I like lanacote). Could also use machine screws tapped into the mast wall - rivets will be stronger.

Do not use...

Re: Designs for a Strong Autopilot Drive Mount / Shelf?

1/8" is too little, 1/2" is about max you'd use around the main bulkhead to contact the hull. I went with 1/2" as it is easy to work with and convenient to purchase. 3/8" would work as well.

To...
