Re: Replacing Skin Fittings And Ball-valves The Boat's 5 Years Old.

I wrote about the TrueDesign valves somewhere earlier in this thread. While I'm not enamored with a thruhull (skin fitting) attached to a valve. I think the TrueDesign valves are good, far better...

Re: Seacock/Through-Hull Replacement

Of the two glass filled nylon ball valves, Tru Design and Forespar, the Tru Design is, in my mind, the far superior valve for marine use. It used far superior materials and is clearly a better...

Sailrite LSZ-1 for sale

We've moved off the water and back to land, and my beloved Sailrite LSZ-1 sewing machine, which I've had for about 10 years (the last 5 years at our home), is for sale. The vinyl outside of the case...

Re: Silicon Bronze 651 or 655??

As far as I know all American made bronze seacocks are made of 85-5-5-5 (nominal values 85% copper, 5%tin, 5%zinc, 5%lead. This is also known as Alloy No.836, leaded red brass or composition Bronze....

Re: NPT Fittings, How tight should they be

SeaSloth - If I understand you correctly you're replacing some PVC elbow tail pieces with Groco elbow tailpieces.

There have been many excellent responses, but here's another response to consider....

Re: Sea cock to Through Hull Threads

1. I'd tend to go along with Captain465, and use 4200 for anything that you might want to disassemble and that includes the thru-hull to the hull connection. If you follow Mainsail's installation...

Re: Seacocks... MARELON or BRONZE

Autumns Wind - Earlier this year there was a similar discussion about Forespar's Marelon and bronze seacocks.

https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f115/marelon-seacock-failure-103175.html

You...

Re: through hole fittings

TopperHarley - If you read my earlier post this might seem like an about face.

My sister and her husband live in Wollstonecraft, NSW. I might have a more local solution for you.

If you read...

Re: through hole fittings

Echo pilot - If you consider what you put to control the water flow that those holes in your create go with bronze (not brass). The bronze I'd look for is called Composition Bronze, 85-5-5-5, or...

Re: Seacock/thruhull help needed

Sailorchic - you're right we have flogged this dead horse pretty well. I really enjoy the discussion. Stuff like this always makes me think. Your arguments are too well thought out, persuasive and...

Re: Seacock/thruhull help needed

Sailorchic -

Your comment, "Think 125 pound steam running at 350 degrees F or higher, where the pipe dope would flow." got me thinking about a time back in the late 50's when I was working for...

Re: Seacock/thruhull help needed

It's been awhile since I last installed a seacock. It seems to me that I put 4200 on the thru-hull mushroom base and the threads, as well as on the bottom of the seacock flange. In a manner similar...

Re: Seacock/thruhull help needed

Cheechako - I believe the issue regarding thread quality is, as you've probably guessed the attempt to squeeze those extra parts out of a tool and the saving of time.

In metal, among other...

Re: Seacock/thruhull help needed

Sailorchic - I believe you're confusing NPT (National Pipe Tapered Thread) with NPTF (National Pipe Tapered Fuel Thread) AKA. Dryseal. NPT threads designed to require a paste or tape to create a low...

Re: Raw water pump. You can't get there from here

I want to again thank Sailorchic for pointing out that 85-5-5-5 may not be exactly what we assume it is. Aluminum does not turn into lead, anymore than lead can turn into gold. And even though its...

Re: Raw water pump. You can't get there from here

I apologize. I just saw Sailorchic's excellent piece on bronze vs brass.

I try and stay away from the UNS (Universal Numbering system for Ferrous Metals) like calling red brass C23000. If you...

Re: Raw water pump. You can't get there from here

Skipmac - Look at the Hamilton Marine website and under plumbing and bronze fittings you'll find exactly what you need, a 1" to 1/2" bronze reducer bushing that will transform your old Groco strainer...

Re: Well...I bought one....

Sounds like fun. But heed the advice and do as much of the work you can, this time to get to know the boat. Also, as Skipperjohn said, while the boat is on the hard, check all the seacocks and...

Re: Seacock/thruhull help needed

Glad to hear that you have at least 2, 2" additional scupper/seacocks for the cockpit. It would be ideal to have two additional, above the waterline, scuppers going out the stern. I'm having...

Re: Cockpit Scuppers Size and Hose material

NahanniV comment reminded me of the fact that, if your trying to up the thru-hull/seacock size inexpensively, the Forespar 93 series is definitely not the way to go. The 3/4", 1 1/4" and 2" Forespar...

Re: Seacock/thruhull help needed

Cheechako - Agreed that there are other options. Was trying to match his current configuration and hose setup in bronze at a least cost option. Haven't yet seen a bronze threaded y fitting it would...

Gordon,

What does the ABYC define the "sill" as? The lowest drainage point?

Thanks
