Re: The Reality of Living in Australia and Covid

Try getting into Australia by boat. We’ve both had 2 Pfizer shots and will be arriving from Fiji, around a 10 day trip to Brisbane. Regardless of time spent at sea (and some people are going directly...

Re: Watermaker - Experiences life expectancy of membranes

We have around 810W of solar and have a LWM-145 12v watermaker. It produces around 5 gallons per hour and runs for a couple of hours each day. Parker advise the membrane life is 3 to 5 years. Power...

Re: 12 volt refrigeration repair or replace?

We recently replaced a water cooled eutectic system with an air cooled danfoss/evaporator plate system. Our compressors are the BD50 and are configured at the lowest run speed of 2000rpm. I would...

Re: Generator or No generator, that is the question

Hi, didn’t notice a watermaker in your equipment. Given you have a washing machine and dishwasher you may need to add a watermaker.

Re: What do you use to lift a dinghy with davits?

We use triple blocks with cam cleats for a similar weight (but only at anchor). I would go with the proper bearing equipped blocks and oversize the sheaves.

Re: Solar panel and AC advice

Maybe the first step for comfortable living is to invest in decent awnings.

Re: Bahamas verse Caribbean

Some places in the Caribbean are turning towards moorings, mainly to cater for the charter boats and also to prevent bottom damage. Go to the BVIs and expect to pay $30 a night plus all of the prime...

Re: How do you feel about plumb bows on cruisers?

Well, having recently sailed from Curaçao to Cartagena on our Tayana 52 in winds up to 40 knots and seas over 10’ I wouldn’t believe that while surfing down waves I could go up to the bow to...

Re: Newbie to circumnavigate Australia, looking for advice

In some parts of the world having your boat name on your dink isn’t a good idea - lets the nefarious know if a boat at anchor is attended or not.

Re: Safer to stick near the equator crossing the pacific?

We opted to stay higher up when leaving the Galápagos Islands and caught the Southern Equitorial current. It took us 21 days to reach Nuku Hiva in our Hunter 43. A boat leaving at the same time...

Re: Florida Homes with Docks

I would think that hurricane protection was a priority for both home and boat so would look at Jacksonville, possibly on Ortega river. There are condos for sale but not sure if the marina slips can...

Re: Usefullness of HF-radio (short-wave radios) in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean

If the boat came with an HF radio then I wouldn’t take it out. The ‘standard’ HF seems to be the Icom M802 and with a tuner and antenna you would be looking at over $2500. If you then buy a Pactor...

Re: Do you need a spare anchor if you SCUBA dive?

If you’re cruising and have used the one scuba tank you carry, with refill miles away, possibly on another island then a spare anchor is looking like a good option.

Re: Zodiac Hypalon - Any good?

Have you considered Highfield? They make a good range of aluminum ribs. We bought a PVC model 7 years ago and still looking good. Florida and Caribbean sun.

Re: Using a generator while on the hook?

Well, sometimes people anchor behind me and I do run a genset, every night and some mornings. It’s diesel, muffled water cooled. I don’t run it because I want to, I have to.
