Re: Modern lithium setup for boats

.

I am advocating doing without a diesel generator.

With a well designed solar power system can cover the electrical demand in areas of reasonable solar insolation without the need...

Re: Modern lithium setup for boats

But a diesel gen set is inherently less reliable and requires far more maintenance and specialised parts than a drip fed diesel heater.

In addition it requires a working electric...

Re: Modern lithium setup for boats

Reliability and redundancy are vital for a long distance cruising boats that are visiting remote places. The first step is is to simplify systems. Complex systems are inherently less reliable.

Re: Red Diesel - Can I use it after approx 3 years

You don’t say where you are, or the area you intend to cruise.

Even a small quantity of red diesel can cause problems in some countries where the red dye indicates tax free fuel. Authorities can...

Re: Modern lithium setup for boats

There is no perfect electrical system for a cruising boat. Everything is a compromise.

Just because you can fit a complex electrical system with a generator, wind, hydrogeneration,
multiple...

Re: Modern lithium setup for boats

Multiple charging sources mean multiple systems to repair and maintain. For most long distance cruising boat I would suggest a simpler system. You don’t want to be stuck in remote places trying to...

Re: La Vagabonde

Drama makes their videos entertaining, but I think they are a bit disingenuous dismissing the problems as "to be expected".

Having commissioned a couple of new vessels (including a custom ...

Re: Anchor Balls

My suggestion for an international cruising boat is to dot the "i s" and cross the "t s".

Local cruising boats sometimes become complacent because their home country ignores certain regulations....

Re: Why you might consider still keeping your generator

I think it is important to emphasise that solar production is very dependent on conditions. Managining comfortably without a generator is not practical for all vessels and it is obviously not working...

Re: Rocna Mk II

We are only talking about an extra 8 kg. This will not have any practical effect on a boat weighing over 15,000 kg.

If you are really concerned, there would be few boats that could not remove far...

Re: Why you might consider still keeping your generator

Kerosene (or wood) are viable fuel sources that consume no electricity, but these appliances need to be built in and externally ventilated.

Without external ventilation the internal humidity will...

Re: Anchor Balls

The enforcement of the use of day shapes is very country specific. As a long distance cruiser the best policy is to always adhere to the international collision regulations, irrespective of the local...

Re: Why you might consider still keeping your generator

Hydronic diesel heaters are great, air diesel heaters are OK, but both of these options are not suitable if you depend on solar power.

In cold conditions solar power is likely to be at a minimum....

What about this super yacht that was next to us in Scotland. Anchored or underway? :).

Re: Winter battery recommendations

If leaving the boat for long periods with no loads I would disconnect shore power, but leave solar connected (unless there is a risk of snow covering the panels).

Adjust the solar regulator to a...

Re: Fortress anchor no chain? Just rope rode?

The Fortress anchor does work with an all rope rode and this can be useful. Without any chain the total ground tackle weight is very low. The anchor can even be swum out, especially if a small fender...

Re: Issues with Condensation!

The bottom line is cold surfaces induce condensation. If you can avoid cold surfaces (with insulation) you will reduce, or eliminate condensation.

Introducing ventilation in the form of dryer...

Re: Issues with Condensation!

Ice boxes are different to yacht interiors.

Ice boxes are insulated to maintain a cold temperature. Yacht interiors (in cold climates) are insulated to maintain a warm temperature.

Cold...

This shows the value of insulation.

Teak decks are typically only 6 -12mm of less than ideal insulation material, but nevertheless this report highlights the reduction in condensation that can be...

Re: Why you might consider still keeping your generator

These rules of thumb are often repeated on sailing forums, but in my view they can be very misleading. In reality, solar insolation varies enormously Unfortunately, there is a tendency to use these...
