Re: Splicing 4-strand

Okay... I did the splice. A couple of miss-steps along the way but the video really helped. (Thank you, Lass. ) I hadn't come across that one in my online search but was glad to get it and downloaded...

Re: Splicing 4-strand

Thank you, ggray...
With 3-strand, your first tuck is the middle strand. With 4-stand, there is no middle strand so do you start with strand 1 or 2 or does it matter?

Re: Splicing 4-strand

Yeah, this stuff looks exactly like 3-strand twist. It's not until you unravel an end that you realize you got more than you bargained for. I tried to contact Samson Ropes but they won't accept my...

Re: Splicing 4-strand

There may be some value, Rucksta, in the eight strand polyester eye splice video but it is hard to follow. I guess I'll just have to try it, treating his double strands as single ones and see if I...

Re: Splicing 4-strand

Thanks guys,
Yes, Animated Knots is very good but I don't see anything dealing with 4-strand rope.

Splicing 4-strand

Does anyone have instructions for making a long splice in four-strand rope? Neither Sampson nor New England have info on their web sites and what little I see on YouTube is difficult to follow....

Re: Non-marine paint for down & dirty dinghy

Thank you, everyone. Some amazing information and I appreciate everyone's time and knowledge. For me, marine paint is simply not available. But there is a hardware with an automotive section so I'll...

Non-marine paint for down & dirty dinghy

Using industrial epoxy to build a cheap plywood dinghy in a remote location... no marine paints available. What's my best bet for paint over cured and sanded epoxy. I hear an acrylic latex offers...

Re: Dinghy etiquette

Yes, CaptTom. People who block the dock by using a short painter will get their painter cut in my neighborhood. Not everyone is spry enough or physically capable of jumping from dinghy to dinghy to...

Putting the twist back in line...

I salvaged a piece of 1-inch mooring line that looks in good shape except for a 2-foot section in the middle where the line has unraveled. (No swivel?) Seems to me, years ago, I read about a...

Re: Knots for tying into mangroves

Thanks everyone for an informative discussion on a little-discussed topic.
I hate to admit it but in the past I used a short length of chain around the mangrove and shackled to my line. Then the...

Knots for tying into mangroves

The season is upon us and I've started sorting hurricane lines. But when the time comes, what's the best knot? Some years ago during a talk hosted by Bruce Van Sant, he discouraged the use of...

Re: Outboard, too rich, too lean???

Okay, thanks everyone. A lot to chew on here, some of which I don't understand completely. But hopefully the carb is okay. I bought it about six months ago as a backup. Installed it to verify fit and...

Outboard, too rich, too lean???

Mercury 2-stroke, 4-hp, six years old, Model: 1B680388
On the way to the dinghy dock, the engine seemed sluggish and as I slowed, it died. It started up but putting it into gear immediately killed...

Recommend a Mercury Forum

Can someone recommend a good Mercury Outboard Forum. Yamaha has a great one; very active. But I have not come across a good one for Mercury.
Appreciate any suggestions.

Re: Rigid Tender Recommendation

I'm beginning to lean toward the Walker Bays. But not sure which would be best for me, the Classic 10 (standard dinghy configuration) or the WaterTender 9.6 (more of a cat style). Anyone have any...

Re: Rigid Tender Recommendation

Okay, first off... thank you everyone, for all the suggestions. I'll need some time online to explore the options.
Size isn't a huge issue as the dink will be in the water full time and not be...

Re: Rigid Tender Recommendation

Haiti. And I don't want a boat built from old packing crates. Thanks.
And not sure why someone would suggest a nesting dingy when storage is not the issue. The Walker Bay WB10 is more along my...

Thanks, rslifkin for responding.
I'm down here in God's Country with nothing available used. I have to buy new and have it shipped from the US. Also, it only needs to carry me ashore, so as long as...

Re: Patches for inflatable

Ahh... so you do like arguing with the trolls :-) No, I don't have 5200 aboard. Frankly, I consider it a structural adhesive to be reserved for hull-to-deck seams, mounting insulation pins, the...

Re: Patches for inflatable

I obviously cruise the wrong waters: No 5200, of either kind, available locally. No acetone. And definitely no seven days waiting for a cure. I can't walk on water. Okay, maybe wait an hour or two on...
