Re: Who’s Using a Manual Windlass for Daily Anchoring (and Liking It!)?

Have just watched a yachting Neighbour pulling 40m of 10mm chain by hand, his Maxwell winch had failed, (apparent worm gear failure) As I get older I think, hmm, maybe I should modernise. Then I see...

Re: Opinions on Bruce Roberts designs

If you buy a yacht based on what you hope to receive when you come to sell, you will most probably be disappointed, The saying " a boat is a hole in the water through which you pour money" was well...

Re: Opinions on Bruce Roberts designs

Steel is a good hull material, but as in most things it is all in the preparation. Alloy is another very useful material, but once again you have to do everything right and it will outlast most of...

Re: Retractable Keel while underway

It all depends on your ballast situation, if you have internal ballast you can generally lift it (incrementally) at any point of sail other than hard on the wind. You adjust it to minimise leeway as...

Re: Antifouling in Florida

Find me a paint that works as well as TBT did (does) and I will use it. If the us Navy commercial ships and other big brothers don't use TBT, What do they use? and why isn't it available to us...

Re: Antifouling in florida

I have found trilux to be better than trilux33 that being said there doesn't seem to be anything out there that can match the old TBT recipes. everything seems to have copper in it! makes an old...

Re: EU citizens - non EU registered but VAT paid boat - Are we crazy?

If you really need to have the Canadian flag flying, fly it from the port spreader, this will tell other folk that there are Canadians on board.

Re: Centerboard Keels in Blue Water Vessels

Centreboarders tend to rely on form stability rather than a deep ballasted keel, in my experience they are often stiffer at anchor, don't roll so much for the same reason. Once you learn how to sail...

Re: Where to look in New Zealand

Auckland, Tauranga, Whangarei, Tutukaka, Bay of Islands would have the largest concentration of boats / yachts in NZ. The North east coast has some of the best cruising NZ has to offer The further...

Re: Steering Failure?!

Folk generally check the prop shaft with reasonable regularity ( once a year?), but often forget to inspect the rudder shaft, it sort of isn't out there, so no one expects it to be a problem.
Not...

Re: Steering Failure?!

having 2 centreboards, steering can be effected by the position of the aft board, it isn't perfect, but definitely a get home method.

Re: Who’s Using a Manual Windlass for Daily Anchoring (and Liking It!)?

Re: Search for 24-foot sailboat off Hilo Hawaii (Merged)

I think in most cases they used what they had, also in most cases they were reasonably skilled, the most important factor to me though is that they took responsibility for themselves. There was no...

Re: Search for 24-foot sailboat off Hilo Hawaii (Merged)

Sailors have sailed many miles in yachts of similar size to this one back post WW2, the thought that you needed a yacht in excess of 30 feet just wasn't considered necessary.
A friend has a Seabird...

Re: shallow draft

Alloy CB best of both worlds.
Many NZ keeler designs have 1.8m draft as std and go to windward well, 1.7 is a tad less but shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Self steering - the progress, Part 2

Hi Chrisc, havn't been down to Whangamata for a year or three, I did sit out a 3 day blow a few years back on a mooring just west of the the ferry crossing, my passengers got sea sick from the swell...
