Re: Stuffing Box question

GFO is good packing. It should not be dripping at all when idle. Do the compression up until it stops leaking. When running, I keep a close eye on the temperature at the packing with a temp gun...

Re: Muir Cougar Electric Windlass dis-assembly?

Oddly enough I’ve just done this.

Take the bolt off the side of the capstan and disassemble the capstan side completely. In theory the shaft will then push through to the other side. In practice...

Re: Traditional stuffing box material

I think what I’m going to do is run with my new GFO product for a year, making sure it is dripping a little bit, then I’ll pull it out after about a year and inspect the shaft. If there is any sign...

Traditional stuffing box material

Hi,

I’ve recently purchased a new to me glass sloop which has a traditional stuffing box. It was in dire need of ‘re packing’ as it leaked terrible.

Today I replaced the packing with GFO...

Re: Your favourite (or least favourite) shaft seal.

Just adding my 2 +cents worth.

I replaced a very messy greased traditional packing about six years ago with a PSS. This was on a 25mm shaft. About a year after I’d fitted it I had what I could...

Re: New stuffing box getting hot no matter the drip rate

Hi, I’ve just ordered a meter of GFO which is Gore-tex, it’s costing me $65. I could only find it in one place in Australia. I was initially after a project called Duramax Ultra but it seems that no...

Re: Arnold's Boat Shop

Well it’s now June 2023 and the ‘new’ owners seem to be running this shop in the same manner as the old one. Almost impossible to raise them on the phone, and don’t return phone messages, won’t...

Re: Recommissioning Fuel Tank in Keel

I reinstated a keel tank in my steel French 1980 Bieroc ketch about 5 years ago. It’s such a narrow deep tank that accessing it all to clean was not possible. I ended up using a product called Fuel...

Re: Nanni and Beta engine difference

The difference between the 3JH and 4 JH would probably account for the noise difference.

Re: Edward William Insurance

I’m now paying over a thousand for third party insurance and I assume the cost of the first $20k salvage for my 1980 steel to sit in a marina. Edward Williams quote is a third of that.

I have...

Re: Do you mark your anchor line

I use one colour paint. Use a little pain brush and use some cold galv primer. I paint just one link for every 5 meters. So, 2 x 5 = 10 (2 links), 3 x5 =15 (3links) etc. this works well for up to 70...

Re: How to wire gps antenna to Standard Horizon GX2150

Yes, changed the baud rate and used the wires as indicated.

My radio has a DSC calling function which I’d like to be able to use. Can’t use it without gps.
