Re: Outboard carburetor - question on Pilot Jets

Thanks for the replies so far.

As per my opening post, I'm not seeking help to "fix" a carb (I fixed it weeks ago). Instead I started this thread to try to understand how carburetor jets work and...

Re: Outboard carburetor - question on Pilot Jets

@ Jenna1: Thanks, relevant experience report, though I found no water in the bowl during any of my stall events.

@ Gilana: Thanks for expert level detail, esp how the activation and deactivation...

Re: Outboard carburetor - question on Pilot Jets

Yes, and doesn't that seem to be unexpected - keeps going at low speed but not high?

I can actually get my engine to hit high revs, but it dies down in about five seconds despite the main jet...

Re: Outboard carburetor - question on Pilot Jets

Ok, that would mean the lower-than-atmospheric air pressure in the venturi gets down to the float bowl via that vent.

Can you nudge me a bit more to the point where I understand why, at WOT, the...

Re: Outboard carburetor - question on Pilot Jets

I thought the air in the float bowl is simply normal air pressure.
I read somewhere that (some?) bowls have overflow ports to the outside where excess fuel can escape if the bowl overfills; such...

Re: Outboard carburetor - question on Pilot Jets

Thanks for these suggestions; further ones are welcome.

@Sailmonkey: I would think the air pressures in the float bowl and venturi should not be affected by whether the pilot jet is open or not.

Outboard carburetor - question on Pilot Jets

I would appreciate some insights into the nitty-gritty of Pilot jets in small outboard carburetors.

Photos attached below show the Main jet (large) and Pilot jet (small) of my 15hp Yamaha. But my...

Re: Removed check valve from bilge pump- now it won't stop running

I'm with John's reply her - only the upper float switch can turn the pump on.

The setup achieves what an intelligent float switch (like Water Witch) does by using an electronic delay. Instead of...

Re: Removed check valve from bilge pump- now it won't stop running

Got it, thanks John. Absolutely no typo, just a very nice and clever setup by Panacea.

Simple time delay for bilge float switch

Acknowledging that the solutions using two pumps, a check valve or an intelligent float switch can all work, for some simple scenarios (e.g. a skiff tied to a dock unattended) I have often wondered...

Re: Removed check valve from bilge pump- now it won't stop running

Panacea, there could be a graphical typo in your circuit - doesn't seem like the lower float switch will ever turn the pump on?

Re: Very small water-maker oder Big one for very fast refilling?

Here's a quote from the Schenker web site:
"A Schenker watermaker ..... does not require adjustments, is totally silent and vibration-free."

In the light of Jkleins's observation about the PS 40...

Re: Kayak vs. Dinghy

Ok Hopper, touch slippery but quite right. I'll have to blame Jimbo and Ungvar then for sucking me in to their promotion of arctic style kayaks ...

Now I actually quite like those arctic kayaks...

Yes, very nice Hopper.

But then there's a subtle but significant difference between wriggling your legs into an enclosed kayak with smallish cockpit (so designed to cope with cold water and...

Re: Kayak vs. Dinghy

Many of these arctic style kayaks have quite small cockpit openings to mimimize water coming in and keep legs warm. If your boat doesn't have a swimming platform, it could be tricky to enter from a...

Re: Kayak vs. Dinghy

Yes, very nicely packable.

Going off on a tangent:
When you look at 50sec into the video, isn't it a bit frustrating how videos that show paddle boards used in stand-up mode, always find glassy...

12v Air Compressor - product search

When looking at COMPACT air compressors (not the big ones with bulky tanks), the typical compact 12v model sold by auto stores is made primarily for inflating tyres (see pic below).

I have been...

Re: Lawsuit against Boatyard

Question: In order to avoid situations like the OP's, how realistic is it to agree, at the start of a boat yard project, that:

(1) The owner can inspect work done once a day (if he wishes to)...

Re: Circle Cutter - any tricks to cut plastic ?

Some feedback on my circle cutting endeavours:

(1) Firstly, I changed the plastic I am using from 2mm to 3.1mm thick (1/8 inch). So it makes the job tougher.

(2) The vernier caliper method...

Re: Circle Cutter - any tricks to cut plastic ?

Thanks for every reply, gents. Always learn a lot on CF.

Circle Cutter - any tricks to cut plastic ?

Hi all,

I need to cut an 86mm circle in thin acrylic sheet (2mm thick) to fit an instrument. Preferably a neat, tight fit.

I have a set of hole saws but nothing at 86mm. My abilities with...

Acid sounds like a worthy idea, but the logistics look difficult to me, though I'm always keen to learn new methods - especially if they're quick.

Looking at the photo showing the 5 slotted head...

Heard of this but haven't done it myself, so just wondering, Peter, from your experience, how long are we talking here keeping the short going - should you limit it to something like 5 seconds or can...
