Re: Water jerrycan for gasoline

In Australia, it is illegal to put fuel in a non-approved container. Fuel rated ones have a conductive element so it avoids any build up of static. Strictly speaking containers must be sitting on...

Re: Is a Cordless Power Washer too good to be true?

Good luck with that. I bought one with a good returns policy on the internet. It was a piece of junk and even changing the pick-up hose and connecting to the fresh water system it was still too...

Re: ground chain winding?

Back in the 1970s, I laid a mooring for my first boat and managed to get the riding scope caught under the ground chain, so the swivel could not turn. 1 week later, yes the scope had now pulled the...

Re: Runaway diesel engines

Now Now, how can "eating a whole packet of Tim Tams..." be considered as "Not a fun experience"? Seriously though, yes I had the issue when the foolish mechanic who had just done an oil change, yes...

Re: Sunbrella quality?

About 5 years ago I was told by a local sailrepairer/upholsterer that the shorter width Sunbrella had deteriorated in quality but the full width ones are still excellent. Not validated that but it...

Re: Shins. Not "shims" - shins.

My wife always wears shin pads (soccer type) as her skin is so fragile. I always have a piece of closed cell foam inside my broad brim hat, so nowadays I never bang my head on things, unless I am...

Re: Why don't yachts have wave cancellation

the 12m class in America's Cup developments did a lot of studies and experimentation with these but also concluded that the set speed nature of the benefit was outweighed by the drag caused at other...

Re: Deck Shoes. Which go hard in 1-2 seasons and which don't

Yes, the loss of the Volley was sad for Australian sailors and I suspect a few tennis players too. I changed to a cheap Aus brand some 5 years ago, kangaroo skin upper fully bonded to sole so no...

Re: Ultracapacitors parallel to houe battery.

I may have missed a post on this, so forgive me if I did but.... Australia is a leading researcher in the field of super capacitors and most US sales are originated here, or so I was informed at...

Re: Replacing my water heater

I would seriously disagree there, if you are not using engine water to heat domestic hot water then plug the hoses.
If you use a loop, you may bypass too much water from the engine cooling and...

Re: emergency conversion fresh water pump to raw water?

Yes, about 1985, we were on a Tayana 55 and gen set raw water pump failed, main engine had other issues and batteries fading as we cruised around northern Phillipines. Took a fresh water pump,...

Re: Saildrive Anode

Extra info - of course there is a zinc anode behind the prop as well. I have spares for this as it never seems to degrade anyway but I could end up with :
Aluminium saildrive
Zinc anode
Bronze...

Saildrive Anode

It's time for a scrub and antifoam, so I contacted the Volvo agent here in Sydney for a new 3 piece anode for the folding prop (3 blade) on my Volvo 120SD.

The sure me that Volvo has now changed...

Re: What would this part be called?

They are called Canopy Buttons at Whitworths in Australia, a nylon button that has a central hole to take a screw, intended to take a loop of shock cord or similar around the button.

Re: Rescue off NSW South Coast Australia

Pics on the evening news Sunday showed a relatively flat bottom, white, with a sail drive but no keel. I would have guessed about 9m too.
Seemed like a planing hull, so sport boat style perhaps, or...

Re: Marine surveyor East Coast Australia

Check the Club Marine website for surveyors in the area you need. No recommendations but I believe that they are only listing the ones without a big back mark against them.

Re: A very good 35' one hander

I could promote my Farr 1020 as I find her easy to single hand, but for your purposes it is more important to summarise the needs when single handing.
My criteria were
1. Wheel steering with an...

Re: Deck Hatches on Aft Deck That Are Walked On?

I realise the discussion has sort of moved-on from here, but.... If you use those studs one side they will cause the seal to "slide" as it is compressed in the closure motion. That will damage the...

Re: What is this and what does it do?

Yes, backstay antennae is the best for single mast, but you could use a large whip if you prefer, although not as efficient.
