Re: Great loop, bridge and lock costs

That's a deal. Never seen one yet less than 15 bucks, usually they are closer to 20 bucks per tank.

Re: Buying new batteries! Most bang for the buck?

US Battery makes very good flooded 6V batteries and they are cheaper than Trojans. I have a set of 4, very happy with them. They're worth checking out.

Re: Lake Michigan to East Coast / Carribbean

If you're going to do the Erie Canal you can catch it at Buffalo so it makes no sense to even look at the TSW. If you go TSW then logically you would cross Lake Ontario to Oswego and do the Oswego...

Re: Three Canadian Sailors Rescued off Hawai

I have to agree with DOJ. There is a point to picking the scabs when these things happen. People frequently come to this forum saying "I know nothing about sailing but will be sailing around the...

Re: Experience Needed Young couple

You can learn a lot about sailing by crewing on some local racers' boat. That will not teach you jack about passagemaking, but you'll sure find out how to make a boat sail. Got a yacht club around...

Wow! That looks like a well maintained, ultra seaworthy vessel capable of crossing an ocean for sure.:whistling:

re: Best Solar Panels For The Buck

Man, I'd be concerned about a good wind taking that whole structure right off the boat. Are the ends on your SS rods through bolted and not just held on by those little set screws? Hope your panel...

Re: Two men and boy rescued near Hawaii

There are several companies selling kites for sailboats. Here's just one:

Re: 3 Canadians Rescued From Sailboat off Hawaii

Well prepared? The fact they got into this mess might suggest otherwise. Let the post mortem begin.

Re: John Batchelor: Canadian Sailor Missing In Bahamas

Didn't really know him well but had spoken to him on occasion. We saw him last year passing through Telegraph Narrows at Deseronto, he was travelling with another boat on which the skipper was also...

Re: Reducing Genoa Size...

We have a 150 and it's usually very windy/gusty where we sail. We are downsizing to a 135. We often end up reefed and the sail shape goes to crap pretty quickly on the bigger genny.

Re: Two Anchors in Abaco ?

Wait till the two rodes wrap on you from turning in the wind and tide and you start to drag. You won't do that again.

Re: 12 Volt Meltdown and Malfunctioning Inverter

I have a 100 watt inverter that I run a 22" LCD TV off of, it draws 6 amps. The TV is rated on the case as drawing 75 watts, therefore, the 6 amps is exactly what I would expect to see. 6 amps X 12...

Re: Complete removal of antifouling paint?

Why not use a self - polishing ablative? If you do it right, using different colours per coat, you will only need to touch up yearly in the spots where the colour change is showing through. Little...

Re: Thinking of buying a 1981 Contessa 26

Couple of things. You need to hire a surveyor, a good surveyor. Do not take the broker's word for the condition of the boat and do not use a surveyor he recommends. Get advice on a good surveyor...

Re: D400 vs. Air X plus another question...

If I was doing a trade wind circumnavigation I'd go heavy on solar and certainly would not consider 3 wind gens. Two maximum would be it and that would just be for redundancy since 1 for use at...

Re: charging Batteries

Do you know how many amps you use per day? That's kind of a starting point. 225 amps hours is nothing these days for most cruising boats.

Re: Hard Freeze Warning in Florida Areas what are you doing?

Boo-hoo! So cold. You might even have to put long pants on today.
Was -22C here last night, not going to break -20 today.

Re: We Have Returned to Patagonia

You're still going to maintain your SailBlogs site? Have been following your travels for a couple of years now, interesting reading. Cruising with a food/wine slant, can't beat that!

Re: Solar Panels

We have a 220 watt Trina solar panel. Big panels like this put out well over 30 volts, I think ours is 37.5. You need an MPPT controller or you will lose half your power. We have a Morningstar...

One more from MSNBC, most dangerous part again proven to be moving from one boat to another. Someone almost bought it.
