Re: Go small and go now?

Unfortunately not. A friend has a Nicholson 32 and the gelcoat literally fell of his boat a few months ago when being hauled out. I mean: they pressure washed his boat and whole sections of gelcoat...

Re: Outboard motor lifetime fuel usage and emissions

The difference in fuel consumption is irrelevant… we use maybe 10 l of fuel per year for our outboard. Even if the outboard would have twice the consumption, the difference is irrelevant. And almost...

Re: Is this a keel problem?

No, it is not a problem. It is simply the bilge as others stated. Clean it, treat it and you are good to go. And rust is quite normal on keels of older boats. Just treat it annually and it will be ok...

Re: Broker is privately "flipping the good deals"?

We sold our previous boat through a good and competent broker. A potential buyer managed to get my phone number and gave me a direct low ball offer. When i said that: 1. I was not interested 2. He...

Re: Navionics just updated their terms to limited logged users to two per account

Just downloaded TZiBoat and it seems to be a very good app. However, their map coverage is incomplete. I would love to have the cap verdian isles, since we will be crossing the atlantic via these...

Re: Boat weight - construction quality?

We are sailing the oceans since a few years, living full time aboard our beneteau oceanis 43. We had of course different weather conditions, ranging from no wind to a quite strong blow somewhere...

Re: Orca attacks off Norway, moving 3,000 miles. Learnt behaviour?

No they are not, you are misinformed. We sailed this region last year and saw lots damaged boats on the hard in every harbour. Steel boats, long keel boats, skeg hung rudder boats were attacked. Ok,...

Re: New Gels or LIPO4

That is not even close to an argument. You can even get 100 years out of gel batteries ! At the end they will have the charging capacity of your smart phone, but they will still work 😂😂😂😂

Re: New Gels or LIPO4

What a long message which can be answered with just one phrase: there is almost no cost up front anymore…:peace:

Re: Fuel consumption: sail/motor. are you serious?!

Your figures are way off. Sails cost half of what you are saying, we burn about 1/10 th of your estimated fuel consumption for a sail boat. Nothing holds together, except maybe speed. But we are full...

Re: Fuel consumption: sail/motor. are you serious?!

Fully correct: a full service kit, including all filters, impeller and some joints cost about 50$, a V-belt is about 20 and 5 litres of engine oil about 30. As we do all maintenance ourselves, this...

Re: Fuel consumption: sail/motor. are you serious?!

Sails last over 10 years. Our first set of sails, which were not so good quality, lasted 12 years. Replacement costed us about 8k$. Replacement cost of the sails is much much lower than the fuel we...

Re: Fuel consumption: sail/motor. are you serious?!

Well, i just want to add our real life experience when we motored from the Canary Islands to the Capverdian islands due to no wind at all. We had, with our beneteau 43 and a 55 hp yanmar, a fuel...

Re: Outboard decisions: 2 vs 4 strokes

As live aboards, this is not at all our experience… we rarely idle, we go from our ship to the dinghy dock and cut out the motor. The manoeuvering and idling is extremely limited. And the huge weight...

Re: Outboard decisions: 2 vs 4 strokes

We live fulltime aboard our board and have a Tohatsu 5hp, 2 stroke. We use between 10 and 15 litres of gasoline per year. The climate difference is not worth talking about…

Re: Outboard decisions: 2 vs 4 strokes

It is true that 2stroke consumes a bit more gasoline than a 4stroke, but 3-4 times ? it will probably consume 20 to 30 % more and that’s it

Re: Solar array advice & MPPT

We have 4 semi flexible Renogy 100watt panels on our bimini. They are now 4 years old and still doing their job as new. 1 panel had to be replaced because of delamination. Renogy replaced the panel...

Re: Boat Fire and Sinking in Route du Rhum

Again not true. Why don’t you try get accurate information? The batteries on this boat were sponsored and were in fact really Li-Ion and not LiFePO4… and no, please find the information yourself. You...

Re: Ideal Drop-in Lifepo4 Battery Purchase Strategy

Although this is fully correct, the important message is that LiFePO4 batteries will outlast LA 5 to 10 times even when discharged way below what is good for the health LA batteries

Re: Ideal Drop-in Lifepo4 Battery Purchase Strategy

I think it is better to speak about “useable energy” rather than stored energy. The useable energy of a LA battery is only half of the stored energy. If you discharge more, you damage the battery and...

Re: Multimeter for the Boat

Agh, as an electronics engineer my experience is: buy the cheapest multimeter you can get. You hardly never ever need precision measurement on a boat. BUT i have a good reputable brand clamp on DC...
