Re: Would a lightning strike be a deal-breaker?

I agree with Frankly.

I had a lightning rod above the high point of the boat, and have been in areas with active lightning. The rod is connected to wiring that goes to the water under the...

Re: Inboard engines and a changing world

Electricity is not a source of energy! After 258 entries and much debate, please consider that whenever you "plug in" you are receiving energy produced from coal, natural gas, falling water,...

Re: 50 Amp Boat with 30 Amp Shore Power ?

Question 1) How often am I going to come across marinas that don't have 50amp 240v? The first trip is just a few months in the Bahamas and we honestly don't intend to be at marinas overnight ......

Re: What type of heat system do people use on boats when its cold?

We are in the PNW and heat with a Webasto hydronic system. Mold will grow with temperatures around 50 degrees F, so we keep the interior of the boat at 60 degrees.

Twenty two years later there...

Re: Garden hoses, what do you use

There is a technique for coiling a vinyl hose without kinking. Most such hoses have a contrasting colored line in them. You simply lay it out on the dock in a straight line, and then coil it while...

Re: Remote control for docking, thoughts?

I have been using a Yacht Controller for several years. It is very effective for docking in tight spaces. Mine operates a bow thruster, two engines, and the windlass. It is just used for slow...

Re: Trim tab usage question. Still learning.

Trim tabs have greater authority at higher speeds. As you have discovered they also have some effect at lower speeds. The best practice is to adjust the tabs at the desired RPM's to find the tab...

Re: Scarce Parts Simrad IS-11 Speed Trough Water Sensor

Can you please tell me a bit more? The IS 11 was produced with a standard through hull depth, or an alternative deeper through hull for larger boats. Mine is the deeper of them. Would I need to...

Re: Alternator -- New or Rebuild?

A Faraday Cage protects things inside it because the charge is conducted over the external surface of the cage. Here I think that the process is to provide an arc tight environment to contain an...

I recently faced the same issue and opted for the rebuild. I have only 50 hours running time since the rebuild, but it is performing like a new unit so far. I suppose that much depends on the...

Re: Is there an easy answer to the setting of the regulators for a 12 volt battery?

You would want to apply 14.4 volts when a charge is needed, and 13.2 volts when fully charged. I do not know how to do that with the equipment that you have.

Re: Why Not Use AC Power for Thrusters and Windlasses?

I agree that 3 phase AC power is a bit much. Single phase AC has the disadvantage of very low torque on startup. For smaller boats DC electric seems best. Twin engine motor yachts do well with...

Re: Why Not Use AC Power for Thrusters and Windlasses?

Does anyone currently make 230 VAC bow thrusters, davits, or windlasses? It may be that the cost of doing so is too high relative to hydraulic systems.

Re: Battery Chargers Misbehaving

Why is the charger doing 29.7 volts? I thought that 28.4 was the standard absorption setting for a 24 volt system. Maybe that is why they are gassing.
