Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

You don't have to be wealthy, but you do need wealth (or assets, if you prefer). Something like 1 in 5 Americans has negative net worth. Net worth increases dramatically with age, so a pretty strong...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

Yachting is a wealth thing. We could start a new, super-contentious thread on the subject. This is a very expensive hobby. Even younger, budget cruisers, usually come from middle-class families and...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

The weakness of 'appeal to nature' arguments is that we live in an artificial world. The subject of this thread is maintaining and operating manufactured devices: cruising sailboats. It's a lot...

Re: Help Me Pay My Way (Well, Not Quite ... )

Does anyone seriously think today's youth is biologically any different than their parents or grandparents? Maybe all the chemicals in the water? Hormones in the food? We're the same humans, mostly...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

Sorry, I tried to cram two points in one sentence. First was that you're right; it's wrong to observe a single incident or crew and assume stereotypes and chauvinism as the only possible...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

I understand your point and the difference between equality of opportunity vs outcome. However, the husband barker/skipper and wife linehandler combo is so common that, as far as I'm concerned, it's...

Re: Gut feeling on boat sizes.

This does suggest the wisdom in faster (usually larger) boats having less chance at grief due to faster passage times.

Another possibly interesting sideline is wave power. Wikipedia gives the...

Re: Jacksonville FL DIY yards

We hauled this May at the St John's Boat Company for a some major work. Took the bottom down to glass, re-faired, etc, about 5 weeks. It's out on Fort George Island, just inside the channel, close to...

Re: Gut feeling on boat sizes.

I suppose we could just divide SA by LOA. Here's some examples:

Cal 20

LOA: 20 ft
Sail Area: 195 sq ft
SA/LOA: 9.5 *We made this ratio up

Island Packet 38

Re: Gut feeling on boat sizes.

In thinking only of the square cube ratio, you're missing beam to length ratio. Larger boats/ships have significantly lower beam/length ratios than the small boats most of us own.

Larger boats...

Re: Gut feeling on boat sizes.

I'm not an NA, but longer boats tend to have lower displacement to length (D/L) ratios. One reason for this is beam/length ratio becoming much lower.

Longer boats usually carry less sail and...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

Nice deflection. It was about gender roles and sailing. A whole new sideline of ideology and personal attack was opened up with this post:

If anybody's upset, it might be you. But since I...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

Wrong. I realize you're simply trolling at this point, but I'll humor you.

There are scientific studies looking into effects of soy, hops, phytoestrogens, alcohol and BPAs. No, I didn't cite them,...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

Get over the "soy feminizes men" nonsense. The data on that is scant at best. Somehow Asian men have managed to procreate and maintain male-dominated societies, despite thousands of years of soy...

I couldn't say. The Formosa I'd guess late 70s. The CT was probably newer, but the owner had put more love into her. Both had Perkins engines IIRC.

There's a guy who used to post on...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

It's not taboo (maybe at google). There's a history of social sciences creating psychometric data that measure something, but not necessarily what they think they're measuring. See Mismeasure of Man...

Re: Source of hot water while cruising

Slick set-up noelex.

Pretty much what I figured, but having the 'tank' be more of a basin is something I wouldn't have thought of. Great idea and multi-functional.

I'm pondering a very similar set-up. Would you happen to have any pictures/details on your system? Much appreciated, if you have the time.

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

Leaving from a mooring or dock is fine, but the anchor is too heavy for her to haul alone. We're low budget, so a windlass is down the priorities. It's not realistic to expect someone to haul...

Re: Thoughts on 1984 Ta Chiao CT 41

I'll second the previous remarks. I've worked on the cabins and decks of two (one CT, one Formosa). Very low quality plywood with glass over top. The bond between the plywood and fabric was poor from...

Re: Help Me Pay My Way (Well, Not Quite ... )

Before the internet, how many sailors wrote boring travelogues or magazine articles or gave talks to fund their lifestyle?

If their story inspires you to change your life, you got your money's...

Re: Source of hot water while cruising

Boil water on the stove. Mix with a pitcher of lukewarm to taste in a large mixing bowl squatting in the cockpit. Pour water over yourself with a small bowl or ladle. We did this up until about...

Re: Gender roles in sailing and cruising

The worst boating sexism I've seen is from weekend warriors with lousy docking skills. 99/100 it's a scared, incompetent husband driving while berating his terrified wife who's stuck handling the...

Re: Another No-Watch Boat

Exactly, someone might be putting the kettle on or maybe checking your CPA at the nav station. How long did you have eyes on his cockpit?

That said, Annapolis is a busy area. I usually stay...
