Charts for Vanuatu and Solomon Islands

Can anyone recommend a chart source for Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands?

The CM93 charts I have now are ok but not great.

I recently started using OpenCPN again after 3 years, and I'm running into some problems with the CM93 package I was using fine before.

Basically, it only shows the charts below 40deg S....

Re: Question regarding covered Dyneema and Jammers

For Maxijacket - I'd pull the cover back to expose the core and apply the coating?

On my last big trip I broke my 12mm 2nd and 3rd polyester reef lines on different occasions - it was the radius...

Question regarding covered Dyneema and Jammers

I want to move to covered dyneema reefing lines, like warp speed, etc.

My reefing lines are in-boom, and I have a spacecraft gooseneck with integrated cams/jammers.

If all the strength is in...

Re: 316 WLL Metallurgy Advice Needed

What is a "full penetration" weld?

I thought a 316 weld was supposed to be done with a 60° angle between the two welded faces.

Re: 316 WLL Metallurgy Advice Needed

markxengineerin and rslifkin: It sounds like the difference is due to specmanship more than actual process.

Is annealing popular for sailing hardware? My understanding is that it lowers the...

316 WLL Metallurgy Advice Needed

Hi!

I need a custom piece of stainless made for a weird babystay setup. My plan was to have it welded locally.

Looking at various stainless hardware manufacturers I see a wide range of WLL...

Thank You OpenCPN

I spent the last 3 years sailing from Florida to the Beagle Channel, then across to NZ, with no chartplotter - only OpenCPN. There are places in the south of Chile where the only reliable GPS nav is...

Stupid Question About Garmin Radar Interface

In the documentation for the Garmin radar overlay, it refers to the cat5 output of the "radar scanner".

Is the radar scanner the actual radar unit (i.e. a Fantom 18, etc), or an intermediate piece...

Has anyone done it? Does anyone know if its definitively impossible?

Thanks!!

Re: What is this bulb (20 year old deck light)?

Amazing. Got an LED one for $15 on amazon. Thanks everyone!

In retrospect it's ridiculous how long we've been living without a deck light.

Re: DIY Whisker Pole Sheet Release?

This is also a great idea, and super easy to rig.

Id need chafe protection for the sheet, but other than that it's all stuff I already have.

Thanks!!

Re: DIY Whisker Pole Sheet Release?

This is a great idea! The pad eyes I'm using on the mast will make the pole un-jibable (word?) anyway, so the other sheet won't be doing anything anyway.

DIY Whisker Pole Sheet Release?

I'm headed out for a long downwind crossing in less than a week, and since I lack a spinnaker I've decided to rig up a whisker pole for my genoa.

The marina I'm at had an old aluminum mast that's...

Insurance for French Polynesia LS Visa

Skymed is $89/month for both of us, which is expensive. Had anyone used anything cheaper to meet the requirements for a LS visa in French Polynesia?

Re: Iridium Go - is it really a good deal?

Sounds like the answer is that I'm already using it as cheap as possible for daily weather downloads.

Some cruiser friends I met use a 9555 and told me that they pay roughly $1 to download 1 grib...

Iridium Go - is it really a good deal?

I've had an iridium Go for 1 year. It's been my primary source of weather data during a voyage from Florida to the Beagle Channel.

My monthly bill is between $90 and $125.

I have the Blue Cosmo...

Re: Motor oil replaced by Diesel - what do I need to fix?

Re: Motor oil replaced by Diesel - what do I need to fix?

OK thanks everyone - I feel better now. I'll replace the valve seals when I get farther north because that's pretty easy, and just keep feeding her oil for now.
