Re: Spade Anchor

Very interesting thread on the Spade, and great to see the USA Spade dealer participating in the forum. Always a good sign when the folks that sell products are willing to discuss them online!

We...

Hey Factor, I'm sure your $1000 is safe! Although Catana does a nice job with their surf movies!

Re: $ vs. Euro for purchase of French Cats

Yes, you're right. I wasn't clear in my previous post. I meant to say the sellers of European boats OUTSIDE of Europe. The folks in Europe have no impact. Sorry about that.

Re: $ vs. Euro for purchase of French Cats

This is an important observation. Since the new boats have devalued by 20% in USD terms, the sellers of used European boats (regardless of location) will have to discount. Otherwise you could wind up...

Re: $ vs. Euro for purchase of French Cats

I think you definitely made the right call. I would have done the same thing if I was offered the option to buy at a fixed price USD. I could only buy in Euros, and just got lucky on the timing of...

Re: $ vs. Euro for purchase of French Cats

That assumes the Euro goes up. If it continues to fall you won't get the savings. I saved 20% of the purchase price on our boat by pre-paying when the Euro fell.

Re: GUNBOAT Dismasting

I agree with your thinking here, and for most people buying a cruising catamaran, this logic would apply. It seems though, that Gunboat's impressive marketing has convinced some of their owners (and...

Re: GUNBOAT Dismasting

It's appearing more and more that Gunboat = cocktails at the marina + social racing in the bay. Two total rig failures and no explanations from the manufacturer. Surely GB must realize that in these...

Re: GUNBOAT Dismasting

Good point, but I think GB does (and should) care what the general sailing public think of their boats. Gunboat have worked hard to build a brand that appeals to wealthy buyers looking for cutting...

Re: GUNBOAT Dismasting

If we follow the theory that it was a crew decision error, then perhaps some lessons learned and best practices can be determined.

These are conditions where a monohull would likely experience a...

Re: GUNBOAT Dismasting

Exactly, and the problem is that at least some of the people that buy into the Gunboat legend that they are the highest-tech, fastest, safest, awesomest catamarans that money can buy, are not...

Re: GUNBOAT Dismasting

So is this a case of a boat that is high tech, fast, and fragile? They can go anywhere safely, as long as the crew uses the speed to avoid storms.

Re: GUNBOAT Dismasting

Sorry for the double negative. What I am saying is that it IS entirely reasonable to expect a boat to handle 35 knots and 4 meter seas. My point about what they actually endured, is that had Gunboat...

Yes, I have found Ozforex to be excellent. I have moved USD from my accounts in the USA to Australia and from USA to France (for the 5X). All transfers have gone through with no problems at all....

+1 on the reply by Bob and Connie, the data on why we should never use synthetic oil in our engines is worth a ton! I had no idea, but will be sure to never make that mistake on our new...

Minimum cruising RPM

Hello folks,

I am hoping you can help me answer a question about low RPM engine operation. I know the conventional wisdom is diesel engines need to be run under load i.e. high RPM, but I am...

Re: Poor AC Generator power quality

I'm a big fan of Sea Wasp! In fact Drew from Sea Wasp was the technician that came over to the boat to try and figure out the problem with my generator. They are always very responsive and helpful. I...

Re: Poor AC Generator power quality

The Onan waveform was not a good sine wave. In fact it looked very much like the Northern Lights waveform in that is was markedly square. It did however, have a much lower 3rd harmonic and a THD of...

Re: Poor AC Generator power quality

That's good to hear about the Westerbeke. The problem isn't really parts availability. These days with Fedex, I expect I can get parts pretty much everywhere (even in Australia!) the issue is there...

Re: Poor AC Generator power quality

I took my air compressor to the local Onan dealer today and tested it on the 5.0kW Onan unit. The Onan had no problem running the compressor at 120V 60Hz. I will be running the same test tomorrow on...

Re: Poor AC Generator power quality

Is it really running split phase? It's wired up as per Figure 26 in this generator wiring diagram (https://www.dropbox.com/s/jw7b50idqgf51rm/Northern%20Lights%20M673%20120-240v%20wiring.png). Plus, I...
