Re: Confused by race boat speeds and boat handling
Yes, obviously. But the apparent wind does not necessarily "cross the bow" during what someone might imagine is a downwind tack. The wind is certainly forward on one side before the maneuver and then... |

Re: Confused by race boat speeds and boat handling
No, I doubt very much anyone here has ever truly tacked on a downwind course. Cruising cat or racing cat. The sails may have performed what appeared to be a tack but the wind did a gybe. Maintaining... |

Re: Confused by race boat speeds and boat handling
A tack is turning the bow of the boat towards and past the apparent wind. Not the true wind. The performance cats are able to maintain speed such that the apparent wind remains forward. If they fail... |

Re: Best rope for anchor rode
Nylon double (or triple?) braid is the best material. Long life and flexible. But it does not grip well in a chain/rode gypsy. Three-strand nylon grips in the gypsy but is not so nice to handle.... |

Re: Catamaran or monohull?
I didn't indent to disparage the quality or construction. Indeed, most were superbly constructed. Especially some of the one-offs. The races were in California and Mexico. Some serious, some cruiser.... |

Re: Catamaran or monohull?
Suggest some others than those that I have miles on: Gunboat, Mumby, Lagoon, Leopard, Gemini, Outremer, some custom designs, some homebuilts. I have won races in catamarans as Skipper too - but the... |

Re: Catamaran or monohull?
Nope. It is *my* perfectly civil *opinion* expressed as a *honest* response to the OP's question. I have done plenty of miles on both catamarans and monohulls in both fun and harsh conditions. I... |

Re: Full length mirror
A "full length" mirror needs to be only one-half of the user's height and width. In stiletto heels. Just a tip. |

Re: Define "Cruiser"
Like landlubbers, a cruiser is someone who by way of having a floating condo is disparaged by sailors. |

Re: Juryrigging a Rudder
Half right. Lose the rudder on a long keeled boat and the Center of Lateral Resistance barely moves forward. Plus these boats are very heading stable (difficult to turn...). Lose the rudder on a fin... |

Re: New Blocks for Mainsheet on 45 Footer
Even though I like high tech gear in general, I use plain old Sta-Set (dacron double braid) of 11mm (7/16") for the mainsheet. The little bit of stretch saves the gear in a high-wind or accidental... |

Re: That old teak deck again...
Yes, paint it again or use a crowbar and get rid of it. Permanently. |

Re: Confused by race boat speeds and boat handling
Obviously, if the water and wind are moving at the same speed and in the same direction then no sailing is possible. All sailboats take advantage of the difference between the speeds and directions... |

Re: ICOM IC-M710RT Tune Problem
For me it is always that ten cent el-cheapo quad connector on the transmitter. Finally cut it off and used a terminal block. |

Re: First problems
Steel tank with diesel? I think that is bad. Perhaps it is iron? (Someone?) Some farmer or fisherman type will take the fuel off your boat, I would think. It looks terrible. |

Re: Yanmar 3HM35
Blind guess: the coolant pump is not pumping. Also, something is wrong with the coolant fill cap if a freeze plug blows out. The problems may be related. |

Re: In boom reefing padeye positioning
I use end of boom reefing with the lines tied around the boom. I can get any foot shape I need by cranking on the reef outhaul winch. The bit tied around the boom can wander while not reefed. While... |

Re: Getting Closer to a Porta Bote
A Porta-Boat? Ugh. Have you been in one? The rides I have had...I cringe...never would I use one by choice. Rolling up a dinghy is difficult? How lazy are you? There was a "crew" on that Swan 90... |

Re: Plumb Bows, Slab Sides, and Wet Decks
DeepFrz already know the answer, but for others: Yes. Keep the weight out of the ends. It makes a significant difference in pitching and splashing. Boats like in the picture above have fat sections... |

Re: 10 days to see if wife likes it
Sheesh, don't mollycoddle the spouses. Tell them what you are going to do. And you want them to come along. They can decide to stay in the condo, or come along, or just fly in for the anchored parts.... |

Re: Yanmar 3HM35
Also determine why there were no alarms. She should have been screaming for attention. |
