Re: Wintering over in the AICW

Harbors don't completely freeze over pretty far north because salt water has a lower freezing temp. That said, staying further south will be relatively comfortable. I've considered overwintering as...

Re: What to do with batteries I am not using for a long time, in the cold.

+1 to both of the above. If they happen to be sealed batteries that the manufacturer recommends equalizing from time to time, I find spring is a nice time to equalize them. I've been getting a few...

Re: Georgia for the winter?

We spent a winter in Georgia years ago. Great rural cruising there. Occasional nasty squalls or thunderstorms. One I recall blew 60kts probably. Such great bird watching. Loved the barrier islands....

Re: Rigging Knowledge - Where do you get yours?

Look at every boat's rig is detail, get out for a sail if you can and read just about any book you can get your hands on. I've read most of the ones mentioned so far and would concur. Just read...

Re: sailing the coast of Maine

Welcome and have fun. Current outside the bays varies with the tide, actually. Floods NE and ebbs SW. As in many places slack water and high/low tide are not timed exactly. There's plenty of local...

Re: What To Do When There's Only Zephyrs?

Some of my favorite sailing is on glassy water in a force 1 "light air." We have a drifter for those days and it'll take shape of there's any movement to the air at all. Light air sailing skills...

Re: Wood Boat Questions

I agree with all the above; however, I'd like to make some counter points. If you assume that wooden boat is more maintenance, you can still choose a smaller, traditionally-built wooden boat vs a...

Re: Any woody cruisers out there?

We've cruised on our 32' cutter, Mimi Rose up and down the coast and loved it. Have met a number of other cruisers on wooden boats, too. Wooden boats have many advantages if you understand their...

Re: LiFePO4 Batteries: Discussion Thread for Those Using Them as House Banks

If you're willing to give up A/C, TV, and W/D when you're off hookup you could go much longer, it that's a good trade off to you. Also, solar is the silent generator and could get you more time and...

Re: LiFePO4 Batteries: Discussion Thread for Those Using Them as House Banks

Regulating to 0A is an interesting idea. I imagine it would work better if the battery was only 95% charged. Harder to monitor charge acceptance on a full battery, perhaps? I do a similar thing by...

Re: Simple LiFePO4 system, soliciting comments

Gary, I seem to recall some folks saying that Cellog 8s doesn't pull evenly from the cells and will eventually unbalance them. You may want to research this.

If you're FLA start battery becomes...

Re: Simple LiFePO4 system, soliciting comments

Funny you should ask. The system has worked nearly perfectly, excepting the fact that the CALB batteries don't work in winter temperatures here (near/sub freezing.) I've had two incidents with the...

Re: Anchoring Technique with Old-Fashioned Anchors

Well, it's been almost seven years since I bought Mimi Rose. I never did change the anchoring setup, other than a minor improvement to the rope/chain splice and regalvanizing everything because I...

Re: Simple LiFePO4 system, soliciting comments

I have your same concerns, but decided to go with a MiniBMS system mainly to provide HVC in the event of an alternator regulator failure. The wiring with cell boards on a 100Ah bank gets wicked...

I seem to be having a conversation with myself at this point, but perhaps my ideas will be useful to someone later on, so I'm continuing to post here. Feedback is still very welcome, though! Upon...

Re: Simple LiFePO4 system, soliciting comments

As you probably know, there's still an active debate about whether cell level monitoring is needed at all. Personally, I'm not convinced that the clearly non-marinized electronics of the BMS create...

We hard installed a Wilson Sleek cell amp to great effect. We found unusable 1-2 bar connections were usually upgraded to 3 bars of usable and often faster protocol connections. We mounted the tiny...

Fair enough. I didn't mean to apply anything negative by describing their voyage as a "stunt." Probably the wrong word to use. I find their voyage inspiring.

Re: Simple LiFePO4 system, soliciting comments

Well, not as simple wiring wise, but the updated diagram should take care of protecting the cells fairly well to my eyes. I've added solar to the circuit, and used the "Field" terminals on the...

Re: Simple LiFePO4 system, soliciting comments

Good point, roetter. However, we have an independent starter circuit. A small AGM battery powers the starter and is charged by it's own alternator.

Re: Simple LiFePO4 system, soliciting comments

All great points as usual, Maine. I wasn't aware that NC relays could be used for HVC events, that alone makes the system more palatable to me.

I'm still unclear on the best way to disconnect...

Re: Simple LiFePO4 system, soliciting comments

First of all, thank you both for the excellent feedback.

I had hoped that the ProLatchR would be a simple LVC/HVC, but the diode destruction that you mention seems to rule out that attempt at a...
