Re: Switch or Breaker?

My surveyor told me that the coastguard require all positive supply leads off the battery to be fused within 6" of the terminal. When I was inspected by the Coastguard heading south they were...

Re: What to look for in a delivery skipper

Is there a thread about how delivery skippers can avoid being cheated by clients? I've only met one thankfully but it was an unpleasent experience.

Re: ICW in a trailer sailer?

Old boats in the US are cheap so I would fly there and buy one and use it for a 3 months visa then either sell it or pay $500 +- storage and return for another 3 months cruising. For the ICW I would...

Re: Wheel vs tiller advice

All Essex fishing smacks have tillers. Some smacks built as yachts had wheels but then yachties could afford the extra cost. My Alberta CK318 (Class 2 smack) weighed in at about 17 tons and set 1000...

Re: Should I don't buy the boat because of this?

I found a $350 survey money well spent. Not because he found structural problems which were obvious to me, but US Coastguard requirements. Like a notice about chucking rubbish and another notice I...

Re: Should I don't buy the boat because of this?

Good definition. My point was that 'fit for purpose' is the crux. Aircon and generators, solar panels, spinnakers, code zero, 10k nav systems, and so on don't come into 'seaworthy'. Nice to have but...

Re: Should I don't buy the boat because of this?

At 5k risk you are asking him to go for full replacement insurance!! Just go for the minimum third party insurance at about $300 a year premium and use the rigging you have if it is servicable.

Re: Racing Pigeon

We gave hospitality to a racing pidgeon and contacted the owner via the tag on its leg. He told us to wring its neck as it was no use to him if it couldn't get home in time! It stayed with us a few...

Re: Sailing from Boston to New York

Well a 70 ft. mast rules out the ICW so offshore is the only way south.

Re: Float Behind Solar Array?

In Portugal they have trouble with fishermen stealing the solar panels off navigation buoys. Your idea would be a God send and last five minutes! I lost a bowsprit to someone tacking up the creek. A...

Re: Isotherm heat exchanger seacock leaking

The Isotherm through hull worked brilliantly for us. It even worked when out of the water on the hard with just air over the coils. Therefore the 'bobbing up and down in the water' requirement seems...

Re: Going inside in NJ

Hell! 25 foot beam! In some places the ICW seems to be 25 foot wide so you will be aground wherever you go! I doubt if you would have got into the ICW from Atlantic City harbour - that is very...

Re: prop choice and hybrid systems

One of the yachts I sailed on had a regeneration setup that wrecked the gearbox when in neatral. What the designer of the system didn't realise that the gearbox needed the engine running to supply...

Re: abandoning a beneteau cyclede 50.5

When marine surveyors survey a Benatau for you I wonder what potential structural defects they come up with? Presumably insurers are happy to cover such boats?

Re: European alternative to Pacific Secraft Dana 24?

Does she have to have 6 ft. headroom? I'm 6' 1" and move happily aboard a Vega 27 but I have to hunker down a bit but not uncomfortably. I rarely stand up ram rod straight like on parade.

Re: Anchoring in deep water on a slope

Not much choice if you visit volcanic islands like St. Helena. It shelves from 15,000 feet to the shore in about a mile. We put out lots of chain in 50 feet and stayed a week with no problems off...

Re: waste thru hull

How many screwed-on seacocks have you replaced without making the skin fitting leak? Posters here are trying to be helpful.
Smartass comments like yours are not helpful.

Re: Raw water pump impeller sudden failure

Re: waste thru hull

Brave man to fiddle with underwater skin fittings afloat. Agree with Don above. Angle grind off the outside boss, drift out the old stuff - 10 minute job. Personally I would bond in a backing plate...

Re: A sad day at the launch ramp

Buy a 'fixer-upper' that does not take too much to make seaworthy - two months of work and $3000 tops. Then sail and enjoy her and on the way pretty her up a bit - bit of brightwork; clean inside and...

Re: Fiberglass Core Material - What to use?

Very true. My comment was to steer you beyond just designing for torque but for catching ropes. Outdrives take a lot more clout than just torque.

Re: Fiberglass Core Material - What to use?

Being below or slightly above your keel is the least of your problems. What about catching your anchor rode, somebodys mooring line or even a strong lobster pot line round your outdrive. Potentially...

Re: Outboard HP for my Monohull

A Beta 16hp diesel inboard has the same engine mounts as an Atomic 4
Fit a return pipe connection to your tank and a new prop and you are good to go in any weather.

Re: Cost to Cut Mast for ICW

As the opportunity to sail on the ICW is limited, maybe spend the thousands on a tilting mast as used quite often in Europe. If your cat is the usual 'block of flats' then the tabernackle would have...
