Re: Travel time

You have the most data and interest, so my advice is to do some homework, make your best estimate, and then triple it. That will get you pretty close. This is not a snarky answer but a real one based...

Re: Repower or sell as-is? How to price?

Ditto. Whatever it costs to repower, you will never get that money back, so the result would be a net loss from its current value.

You decided to go down this path a while ago, probably...

Re: Has boat insurance become so hard to find?

Track record to insurers means proof you can own and operate a boat without leaving a trail of claims behind you.

From belonging to a yacht club for 20+ years, the most common mistake newbies...

Re: Has boat insurance become so hard to find?

That’s the problem. Too much boat. Would you want to insure people with no track record? Not me!

Re: Can a storm jib be too small

I suppose asking Jenneau would be too simple? The yacht designer would typically know best.

Re: What do you use your SSB for?

On the east coast of the US there are still some good nets that I used to enjoy. Now that we have crossed to Europe, the SSB gets little use. I’m afraid it’s days are mostly over, except for Hams.

Re: Anchoring equations

As a 70 year old who has cruised extensively on both sides of the Atlantic (currently in Scotland), the only times I’ve ever dragged was after a significant wind shift, as occurs frequently in a...

Re: PIRATE MITIGATION

It's funny how fear and macho (bluster?) go together.

Re: Bluewater cruiser thoughts?

How much Bluewater cruising have you done? If little or none, I would highly recommend doing as much as possible on other people's boats, before buying anything.

Sailing offshore and long term...

Re: Annapolis to the Keys in January

Okay! Short, steep 4 meter waves would be horrendous. Well worth the effort to avoid it.

I’ve taken the close inshore route
without wandering into the Steam (of course with a northerly wind,...

Re: Annapolis to the Keys in January

Would love to hear more about the conditions as you saw them off Hatteras. Most of us aren’t ‘lucky’ enough to have that experience and have to settle for 3rd hand scare stories. Apparently you...

Re: Rigging a storm Jib differently?

How is that eye strap attached to the mast? It looks like it would rip out on the first nasty gybe.

Re: Windy.app (blue) versus Windy.com (red) versus PredictWind

None of the above. For my money, LuckGrib is the best weather app. Lots of models, great user interface, and very good weather routing. Integrated seamlessly with Iridium Go.

David Burch has many...

Re: Passing Time on Watch

This will seem harsh to many, but I note you are thinking coastal cruising in a high traffic area. Plus a bunch of morons in very fast powerboats. These are thankfully not common problems in most of...

Re: Passing Time on Watch

After a while, you get into the groove!

Last year my wife and I sailed from the US to the AZORES, 29 days. By the time we got there, we were so used to the pace that we really had a hard time...

Re: Low tech, simple heater

This thread sounds like the prelude to an article titled “Man dies from carbon monoxide poisoning”

Make sure you have a CO2 alarm, at least.

Re: Anyone installed fuel tank for regular gas?

Whenever I get a bright idea like this, I always ask myself, ‘I wonder why no one else does this???’ There’s usually a dern good reason ! If you do it, don’t forget to add blowers and all the other...

Re: Wharram vs Mumby: the better and why

This is so true, but you need experience to choose your ‘last boat’ and it doesn’t sound like the OP has that experience, yet. Building a boat is about the hardest way possible to get that...

Re: How much time do you spend waiting for weather windows?

Exactly. It depends on when (what time of year) and where (especially regards to latitude).

For example, this summer (like July!) we spent two weeks in Falmouth, waiting for a weather window to...

Re: Annapolis to the Keys in January

Exactly. Unfortunately, it is more than possible to have long stretches of bad weather in January. With limited time, you may have to take a less than ideal window to get past Hatteras. Be prepared...

Re: Boat weight - construction quality?

My advice is to forget theoretical arguments like this, and go get as much experience on other people’s boats as possible. Only by being out there on different boats will you discover what YOU like....

Re: Upwind strategy?

I second 'Luck Grip'. Quite cheap if you already have a phone or iPad, and it also works on my MacBook. Not sure about PCs.

It has a library of polars and you can probably find one close enough...
