Re: Morgan 30

I am also a member of the M30 club. I have had a '70 M30 for about 2-1/2 years. After over 20 years with a deep keeled, wooden ocean racer, I have found her to be a surprisingly good boat for the...

Re: Ariel 26 as a camping liveaboard?

Get the Ariel. You can find bigger, wider, faster boats, but you can’t beat an Albert design. I’ve only sailed an Ariel once, but it was a proper little yacht. I owned and sailed a Fastnet winner...

Re: Boats with Shallow Draft for Florida, Bahamas, Chesapeake

There are many drool worthy boats in this thread, but this message is for somebody looking for a good, shallow draft boat who, like me, has more passion than money. Last year, I acquired a 1970...

Re: Chesapeake Bay Sailboat

Long as we’ve included old boats, I’ve become a big fan of the first model Morgan 30. Storage sucks in a huge way, but, in terms of sailing ability, draft, comfort, and cost, a M30 is probably one of...

Re: New topside paint atop the old paint?

I painted my boat with Interlux Brightside, a one-part paint, almost 10 years ago and it still looks OK. Much of what you hear about two-part paints is true, but is it necessary for your application?...

Re: Cape Dory 28 in heavy weather

Somebody might have already addressed it, but the thread begins ( I believe) with good advice, but incorrect terminology. An old Alberg design should heave to nicely. An early reply referred to...

Re: Fin Keels - Skeg Hung Rudders - Full Keels

Actually Doodles, sailing by the stars, square sails, wooden hulls and spars appeal to me fine. Hemp rope & stones for ballast don't do as much for me. I guess you could smoke the rope...

Re: Advice on a Cheoy Lee Please

I know many will cringe, but you could 'glass the deck & paint it. Long as the glue joints are OK, the mast shouldn't be a deal breaker if you don't mind varnishing it periodically.

Re: tiller pilot vs wheel pilot??

When I went to Bermuda years ago, there were several people waiting on parts for their wheel pilots. If it's a well balanced boat, I always prefer a tiller. It feels better, there's less to break,...

Re: Newport 27'

As far as standing headroom is concerned, I always come back to Uffa Fox and Herreshoff. Fox said, "if you want to stand up, go up on deck" and Herreshoff said that most of the sailors he knew liked...

Re: Fin Keels - Skeg Hung Rudders - Full Keels

I guess I'm w/ SaltMonkey on his order of preference. I now have a boat w/ the rudder just hanging out there and it's OK on the Chesapeake Bay, but, from a structural standpoint, the idea of my...

Re: Removing Diesel and Using Outboard on 38' Sloop - Opinions ?

I'm a diesel mechanic, so I appreciate a good diesel as well as the next guy, but, about 2 years ago, I pulled the inboard out of my Westerly & hung an outboard on the stern. I like the simplicity...

Varnish it. When I acquired Favona her mast was painted & I repainted it when I hauled her out. Some years later, as I was fitting a cover for her, I found a place just below the gooseneck where the...

Sail Cleaners

There used to be a place somewhere in the Midwest that repaired & cleaned sails. One of their claims to fame was that they had a process for putting the sizing back into the sailcloth. I misplaced to...

66 Morgan 34

I might have a chance to pick up a swing keel M34 at a good price. I find it an attractive boat, but my online research indicates that there isn't much underneath. I'd appreciate any light that my...

I went to Bermuda on a boat with an in-the-mast roller furling main. I'd never have one on an offshore boat. It took two men and a boy to take the thing in. The big concern was that it would...

I'd rather have a Contessa 32 with blisters than an awful lot of other boats w/ pristine bottoms. I have never heard of a boat sinking from blisters so you're probably OK. Talk the owner down on...

Good on you.

Truly, one of the saddest things I've ever seen was a post on this forum. I don't remember who posted it, but I saved it to send to my son.

Here 'tis:

30 years ago, I wish I...

Thanks for the quick reply gents. I've been working on & fairing Favona for over 20 years so I'm no stranger to a long board. If I had the money, I'd love to have her frames & planking replaced...

CharlieCobra Tell Me About C-Flex

I'm considering putting a C-Flex shell on a 55 year old sailboat. What can you tell me about it?

Thanks
