Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

Adjusting to the circumstances is the most sensible thing I've read in this thread.
I always planned any extended naps for after 8 am. I figured that the 'A' team was on the bridge of an ships...

Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

During a very difficult long passage, with short naps, I found myself connecting my tether to the jack line to go forward and chase that damn elephant off of my boat!

I went below and slept for 3...

Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

True. But most forums are used as a platform for negative judgement.

I'd like to voice a word of caution on the dependents of AIS and Radar.
Not everyone has them!
Your AIS will only detect...

Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

Leaving Simpson Bay in St Martin on a clear calm day. I noticed a 120ft motor yacht cross 50 yards off my stern.

The Captain admitted that he was alone on the bridge setting his GPS course on his...

Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

Yes you can get insurance if you want to pay an extremely high deductible. I based my remarks on conversations with the fellow cruisers I associated with. I had insurance on my boat for the 12...

Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

You're absolutely correct.

I lived on our family farm until I was 29, and learned, very early, that I was totally responsible for everything that happened to me and our loverhood.

Lets not...

Re: Anegada Passage in daylight

Thanks for sharing.

I guess I just prefer to sail longer distances. I once sailed from the USVI's to Trinidad just for the heck of it.

Have a great day!

Re: Anegada Passage in daylight

Really? Have you done it?

My experience was a little different.

My longest non stop sail was from Panama to the Grand Caymans, it took 13 days. Some pesky stuff like 40 knots of wind on the...

Re: Anegada Passage in daylight

It's a valid question. As a singlehanded cruiser who sailed to the Caribbean from SF and spent 7 years traveling from PR to Trinidad and back I can say that yes it's possible to sail from island to...

Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

There are many more passages than just the North Atlantic, Just as there are many, many more boats in the ocean than sailboats.

Based on my observation, at this time of the year, there are...

Re: How to set up jacklines & tethers

I used web jacklines, and before every passage I'd toss them in the water to soak them to stretch them so they'd dry super tight.
Always go forward on the high side and cross over if needed.

Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

Good point. You can also worry about equipment failures while underway. Or maybe we should stress out about the weather going to hell with the odd rain squall complete with water spout ( it...

Re: Singlehanded passage making, Best Practices

1 - live in the cockpit.
2 - If your passage is going to be over 12 hours, start napping before you need to.
3 - Don't depend on your AIS or Radar to save your life.
4 - Know where the shipping...
