Moving Boat out of Turkey ... COVID

We are very excited to be buying a beautiful, lovingly cared for sailboat that is currently lying in Turkey.

We want to move the boat into the EU as soon as possible after purchase, but are up...

Shorter mast for ICW ???

OK.

Maybe a stupid or naive question.

I am looking at boats in the 47-49' range. I eventually need the boat to have ICW air draft, but not for a few years - as I am going to take it to the...

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Taswell added. Also will look down in size.

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Thanks, Sailcrazy. I also like the Taswell. I -refer the deck saloon configuration, but grew up in a traditional cabin. Will revisit them.

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Thx. I remember flooding our bilge and flipping antenna as teen (I was always the one hoisted up) getting under an old rr bridge on the trip through FL/Okeechobee. Fun stuff.

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Thanks, Dr.

I hear you on the ICW. I do have places inside in NC that I'd like to get. What are your thoughts on draft. I'm a west coast of FL sailor.

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

I agree, Greg ... I'm leaning toward the Hylas ... just need to come to that conclusion!

Thanks,

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Thanks, MJH. Good to look at. I guess the next thing I need to do is get out on them.

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Thanks, Hartley. Yes, I do need to look at the individual boats. Does the shorter stick affect performance much?

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Thanks, Alan. You lived my dream. It’s a big decision. Glad to know I’m heading in the right direction.

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

I believe all the Hylases will unless modified. I have to be mindful on the Tayanas.

Thanks for thoughts.

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Thanks Mag3. I wish I could say money is no object! Though I can afford either I don’t know if my inner voice will let me. I’m retiring after working for the last 40 years. Hard to let go of...

Re: Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Thanks. It is an awful pretty boat. Inside and out. What’s the worst thing that could happen if I buy a Hylas, right?!?!?!?

Hylas 49 vs. Tayana 48 DS

Ok, am I insane comparing these two boats?

I’m looking for center cockpit, blue water, ICW compliant boat with no more than 6 ft. draft. I’ve looked at several famous brands (old and new) and...

Re: Shoal Draft Blue Water and ICW CC Liveaboard

Thanks for the input. I know these are great boats. I am a bit concerned about the draft for the west coast of Florida, though I see one is in Palmetto.

Galleys seem to be a bit tight for a...

Re: Shoal Draft Blue Water and ICW CC Liveaboard

That is a beautiful boat. Taswell is definitely going on my list of prospects. My wife keeps telling me that I have to stick to the plan ... I want to buy NOW. I must admit she’s probably right.

Re: Shoal Draft Blue Water and ICW CC Liveaboard

Yes ... I have already discounted several boats because they just don't 'look' right - even in pictures. I do love the classic lines. Galley, head, bed have to fit.

Re: Shoal Draft Blue Water and ICW CC Liveaboard

I harbor fantasies of crossing and recrossing the Atlantic, the Bay of Biscay and Gulfstream. That may change as I get more experience and closer to pulling the trigger.

Re: Shoal Draft Blue Water and ICW CC Liveaboard

I was looking bigger mostly for interior volume because of my height. One thing that a bigger boat brings that I don't necessarily think we need is a third sleeping cabin. I know that people do...

Re: Shoal Draft Blue Water and ICW CC Liveaboard

I'm very familiar with the Whitby. My step-father worked in the yard in Fort Myers where they were made. Would be a hoot to have a boat that he helped build. I had not thought much about internal...

Re: Shoal Draft Blue Water and ICW CC Liveaboard

Thanks for reply.

I know a lot about the running aground part! Glad we did it on nice sandy bottoms.

I am concerned about the fit. Galleys in the pass through seem like they may be a problem....

Re: Shoal Draft Blue Water and ICW CC Liveaboard

Thanks. You’re living the life I want to lead. Island Packets are surely on my short list, but most seem to be little out of my price range.
