Hull Wax or Ceramic Coating

Hello,

I am in the finals stages of a complete rebulild from bare hull up of a 1980's fiberglass boat. The factory gelcoat is in amazing condition as it spent nearly its entire life shaded by...

Re: Stevens 47 or Prout Catamaran

It is a bit early for us, but we have a 1983 Prout Snowgoose 37 classic that likely will be coming on the market in the next 6 months. Currently cruising her full time - leaving Jamaica tomorrow...

Re: Yanmar 3GM 30F stopped while motoring, won’t re start.

Gotcha! Didn't pick up on on that, sorry!

I'd be suspicious of fuel or injection issues - tried pulling an injector out, connecting it to a line, turning the engine over, and...

Re: Yanmar 3GM 30F stopped while motoring, won’t re start.

To ask a loaded question - have you tried using a TINY amount of ether (starting fluid)?

As the GM series have no built in pre-heat system (glow plugs or the like), I have noticed in low...

Re: Are Boats Really This Fragile? Avoiding Costly Mistakes in the Future -New Boat O

My current boat. Prout Snowgoose 37 (Small cat with center mount engine). One benefit is it is extremely difficult to backwater the engine due to there being a constant slope downhill from the...

Re: Are Boats Really This Fragile? Avoiding Costly Mistakes in the Future -New Boat O

Unfortunately, it happens frequently on sailboats where the engine is mounted low in the boat, most of the time below water line. As you state, when cranking the engine too long without starting the...

Re: Are Boats Really This Fragile? Avoiding Costly Mistakes in the Future -New Boat O

Not likely. Shutting off the main battery switch when running the engine causes the alternator to instantly go from high output to nothing, which fries the diodes in the alternator, rendering it...

Re: Are Boats Really This Fragile? Avoiding Costly Mistakes in the Future -New Boat O

Lots of things.. The learning curve in boats is initially extremely steep - akin to trying to drink from a fire hose.

I'd educate yourself - go out with other sailors on the water and take note...

Re: North to Alaska, OUTSIDE Vancouver Island?

I'm from Juneau, grew up commercial fishing all around SE Alaska. Now cruising with my family (brought it from Vancouver to WA, to Juneau, then down to Panama, now up to Jamaica). For the record as...

Re: Seattle to Maine, what paperwork?

Been there, done that! Alaska to Panama, leaving in a couple days for Jamaica and the Bahamas.

You NEED the boat to be USCG documented. State registration will be a major problem in most...

Constant Cycling Variable Speed Freshwater Pump

I have a fairy simple freshwater setup on my boat. Cold water only, two sinks and a watermaker flush tied into it, along with the ability to directly connect dock water. I completely re-plumbed the...

Re: Sonic drive. Anyone have one

I assume you are talking about the Sillette / Sonic outdrives as used on Gemini and Prout catamarans?

if so, yes. Ours has been pretty reliable, just keep up with the regular maintenance. They...

Re: suitable for cruising Mexico?

The hull form is certainly just fine - looks like a double ended dory which are incredibly seaworthy and ride like a cork.

I'd also pay attention to fuel and water capacity as that is certainly...

Re: Deep water anchoring

Agreed. Which was the entire point of my post. "Typical Recommendations" need to be rethought for deep water anchorages, as they generally aren't necessary or practical. In shallow water which...

Re: Yanmar 3gm stops at random underway!

Had a very similar issue with my 3gm - took a while to figure it out.

It turned out to the the racor filter housing had nylon stoppers to plug the unused ports on it. The nylon material had...

Re: Deep water anchoring

I anchored most of the time in Alaska in 20-35 fathoms, sometimes deeper. I carry a new generation anchor two sizes bigger than recommended for my boat, 125' of chain, and 175' of nylon Rode.

I...

Re: Yanmar Saildrive Burning Zincs!

One further idea - if you painted the sail drive with copper-based paint that will cause major issues with corrosion. Make sure there isn't any copper-based anti-fouling touching the saildrive.

Re: Yanmar Saildrive Burning Zincs!

First question - are the anodes actually Zinc or are they magnesium alloy? Magnesium is only for freshwater and will erode as you are experiencing if put into salt water as they are much more...

DC-DC charger recommendation

I'm trying to figure out the best way to charge my engine start battery along with my LIPO4 House bank. It seems the best way to skin the cat here is to use a DC-DC charger. I would think a trickle...

Re: Best moisture proof Salt Shaker

We really like just using Kosher salt. From Alaska to tropical Mexico, we've never had it clump up on us.

Keep in mind it is half as salty by volume as standard table salt when cooking. (use 2...

We are in a similar situation. Our Visas expire the end of April, and we are concerned about the ability to renew. We can't leave the boat long term (it's our home) and we're afraid if we head to...

Re: Yanmar Starter

At least on my 3GM30, the control panel and start switches are known to be problematic, as the wires were a bit undersized. The end result is that enough amps would get from the start button to the...

Re: Pink Strut - Replace or...?

I'd be vary wary of what other "items" are lurking if they couldn't be bothered to change zincs.

It is possible it was in a very hot marina and they simply forgot to check the zincs. It is also...

Re: Ham Radio HF antenna

The tried and true method is to add an insulator top and bottom in your backstay, and that becomes the radiating element (antenna). Then you install copper foil or copper mesh glued inside the glass...
