Re: Chromed bronze turnbuckle turning green - problem?

If the green really bothers you, you can polish them and coat them. Clear shoe polish, vegetable oil, probably some petroleum products work.
Mine are bronze, not chromed, not polished, 50 years old.

Re: Carvel refit.

Those stains on the planking appear to all be in the bilge. Was there water in her or oil? Steel will blacken some woods I think. If the wood doesn't feel spongy or crumbly I wouldn't worry about it....

Re: 50% alcohol and 50% vinegar to clean ears after swimming?

When I read the thread title I thought it was cleaning up uncured epoxy!

Re: Carvel refit.

Very cool. I have always had wooden boats, and done some repairs and rebuilding. Good luck with her and keep us posted.

Re: Sailboat sinks in Hamburg Cove - why let this happen?

Even in salt water, I believe it is risky to leave a boat moored in winter. I dock my boat in winter, and have for decades. When they freeze in, they simply rise and fall with the tide. I considered...

Re: Tacking Jib with Inner forestay

I didn't read the whole thread. Wandering Star's staysail stay is quite far forward, the jib won't always go through without wrangling. Two things help: splice a short line joining the sheets forward...

Re: How to Measure Air Draft Without Climbing Mast

I think I would use the laser. I 'measured" mine by carefully coming up to a bridge gauged at 52' A cyclist on the bridge thought I'd make it. As we got close, the crew sought shelter, and I looked...

Re: Purchased a sailboat and looking for advice.

Please just be careful. Be sure that your boat is sound before going to sea. I think your plan of spending more time sailing locally is a good one.

I've used Japan Drier in oil paint. It works.

Re: Cheapest Cost to Desigh/Build Sailboat for zombies

Before committing huge resources, build a dinghy first. Design it too if you like. Make it a sailing dinghy. Keep close account of your hours and costs, then do the math based on displacement, adding...

Re: How often do you motor ??

My first two keelboats had engines that later failed, and were removed. I sailed for years without. The current boat is bigger and heavier, therefore harder to stop, row, or fend off. I use the...

Re: Insurance, what can you afford to lose?

I still live in a house, in a suburb, where a car is quite useful. The book value on the car is less than any significant accident damage, perhaps $2-3k. If it's destroyed tomorrow I'll buy another...

Re: Insurance, what can you afford to lose?

Interesting discussion. I carry full insurance on the boat, liability only on the car. I'm thinking of liability only for the boat. If she were lost, replacing her would wipe out my savings. I would...

Re: Progressive Lenses on Deck?

I don't dive, the water is too deep to snorkel. I thought of hiring a diver, or asking a friend. I decided I'd still want to pay the friend, and maybe I'll just hold off until I can get another pair....

Re: Progressive Lenses on Deck?

I'll update too. I continued wearing the glasses routinely, becoming more accustomed to them. Last week while checking the boat in a 30 knot breeze, I hardly knew I had them on, until they blew off...

Re: DIY Boatyard in Florida, need liveaboard amenities

I hauled at Cracker Boy W. Palm Beach a couple of years ago and stayed aboard.
There were a couple of negatives:

Come along at slack water, the current runs by very fast.
I hurt myself and had...

Re: Chester, PA to Long Island Sound - Winter

I live on LI, I've sailed and cruised this coast. All of my winter sailing has been daysailing. December can be treacherous, so can April. In April, the weather is generally improving, though I have...

Re: First Wooden Boat

Wandering Star is strip planked without glass and as strong as a tank. I have owned a strip and glass Melonseed, stiff, durable, much lighter than the 'glass ones.
I have six boats and they are all...

Re: Removing plugs from woodwork

I've had success drilling out the bung with a bit just smaller than the bung diameter, then scraping out the remnants.
