Re: Is anybody else finding dealing with vendors has become difficult?

I am doing a major/total refit of a Stuart 47 The interior is stripped out, mast removed, sails and engine replacement.
The primary issue is to find the best suppliers, then start the...

Re: Can I get some opinions? Ketch - Australia

First things first, choose a boat with "The Look" The Martz Craft is better in this regard (IMHO)
The advice to truck her home is very sensible. There will be many many things to attend to on both...

Re: TruDesign fittings

I have used Trudesign (skin fittings, ball valves and hosetails) for complete changeouts in the last 4 boats. (11m thru to 15m yachts and motorsailers, with multiple fittings.)
Great product imho....

Re: Another cutless bearing replacement question (or two!)

FWIW
I chose the non rubber bearing, locally referred to as a "rag type" looks like tufnol??
The local marine engineers are sceptical about the durability of the rubber type, particularly with any...

Re: YACBQ (Yet Another Cutless Bearing Question)

my mistake. You do have a short length of rubber hose between the packing gland and the inner end of the stern tube.
There may be no inner bearing at all, just a free floating shaft with the packing...

Re: YACBQ (Yet Another Cutless Bearing Question)

I'll save you a lot of research and reading, with a summary here, but do read Gerr or Calder on this issue so you are familiar with what you are taking on BEFORE you start.
You probably have an...

Re: Vetus dual stage water lock muffler

I too purchased a Nanni (140) hp to replace a Yanmar.

Re: Marinco solar vent alternative.

I reckon they're noisy rotten things. Mine are being removed and being replaced with either a cowl vent (on the anchor locker hatch) or just a plain (no motor) similarly shaped vent where a sheet can...

Re: Fiberglass over teak deck

After it's covered, it will still feel soft to walk on, and nobody in their right mind will buy that boat.

Re: To-do list: refit a 10-20 yr boat for bluewater sailing

(Quote)
I'm of the view cruising is better than have to spend months (or years) fixing a vessel up. More cruising, less wrenching.
Which is not to say there won't be any wrenching - thus scope...

Re: The Slow Demise of the Sailing Forum

My suspicion is that here on CF there are many serious cruisers/knowledgable participants.
The user posting a question, who has clearly not done any background reading or research into their problem...

Re: Modern lithium setup for boats

Just as a little addition to the discussion,
My boat is primarily 12V
It didn't have a bow thruster fitted.
I have fitted the largest Vetus thruster applicable to a 185mm tunnel. This unit is 24V,...

Re: To-do list: refit a 10-20 yr boat for bluewater sailing

"From MicHughV; Not sure what the moral of the story is here, but investing tons of time and money on a boat is rarely a good investment."

And those that just keep doing it, well that's a problem...

Re: To-do list: refit a 10-20 yr boat for bluewater sailing

In mast:
The sail just looked awful without a roach and battens. The bearing mechanism on the furling mandrel was difficult to inspect top and bottom. The sail always had various creases that were...

Re: To-do list: refit a 10-20 yr boat for bluewater sailing

Where to start. The problem is you don't know what you don't know...yet.
Do you want to restore a boat or go cruising???
Restoration will take far longer and cost far more than you think or can...

Re: Hello! Wanted some thoughts/advice on co-owning a boat

I reckon the first thing to discuss and write down is the exit strategy.
Once that's clear, Enjoy the journey knowing you have a way out should things not turn out as you wish.
Co-Ownership...

Re: Hans Christian 33 - what to look out for

Re: Best way to pass antenna cable through deck?

I would grind the head off (from the aft side), with a wet towel placed around the area.
Tap the bolt forward as far as possible, then grind the forward side of the bolt, behind the nut.

I have recently replaced a PSS Pro Seal (brand new) with a Tides Marine lip style seal.
Why?
PSS seal 3 1/4 inch tube diam 1 3/4 shaft. The bellows at this size is quite heavy and I...
