Re: leave the mainsheet cam open

Clutch cleat. Apologies for my error in the original post. Hence why it's important to leave open.

Oops, typo in the original post: I meant to say "clutch cleat", not "cam cleat".

Re: leave the mainsheet cam open

I suspect that rounding up may have been slowing me down quickly enough that collision was never much of a risk, but I'm not sure.

I'd be curious how fast we were going just before I regained...

leave the mainsheet cam open

I had a somewhat scary situation recently entering Boston's busy inner harbor.

Sometimes I motor into and out of the inner harbor, but we had about 10-15 knots of breeze in a nice direction for...

Re: best cruising grounds for vegans?

Lots of good suggestions, thanks everybody!

As RickG said, it's a choice, and this isn't the place to defend the choice.

Hah, we skipped Trellis Bay on the recent trip, but from what I've heard it was actually pretty good for vegan food! At least before the hurricane, not sure about now.

Re: best cruising grounds for vegans?

Thanks, laika. Yeah-- I'm pretty sure I can be happy almost anywhere with canned food and whatever fresh produce happens to be around. But was looking for tips about which places might be better than...

best cruising grounds for vegans?

Anyone have thoughts about the best places to sail as a vegan?

This would be for charters, or maybe for short-term cruising on a boat of my own someday.

I assume that provisioning for decent...

Re: Long term charter instead of selling

Like a couple others commenting, long-term chartering does seem like an attractive alternative to buying, if it can all work out (in a couple years).

But all of the concerns from the various...

Re: sail carribean single-handed for one season?

gulfcoastsailor--

I love the idea of not buying a boat, but a month in only the BVIs doesn't sound ideal, especially with only the possibility of roaming further. Especially since the BVIs will...

Re: sail carribean single-handed for one season?

captmikem: Buying in FL sounds sensible. Is your thinking that it's better that way (instead of buying in the Caribbean) because FL is closer to me so figuring out the details will be easier? Or...

Re: sail carribean single-handed for one season?

Zanshin: Nice story about buddy-sailing with your boat's new owner. I love that stuff!

The boat cost itself isn't very important to me, only how much I've spent on the whole endeavor at the...

Re: sail carribean single-handed for one season?

Oh, and of course I'd like to get a bit more experience first by crewing for someone (maybe from this site, maybe elsewhere). In the Carribean or elsewhere.

sail carribean single-handed for one season?

Given the facts of my life, I don't think long-term boat ownership is for me. (Married, spouse likes sailing enough to charter sometimes, but probably not interested in long-term living on a boat....

Re: sailing downwind without a kite or pole?

> For lighter air situations

Yes, it's really lighter-air situations I'm most worried about. In heavier air, the wind is enough to keep the foresail comfortably out from the boat (still not...

Re: sailing downwind without a kite or pole?

I had in mind using the main.

Genoa-only is certainly an option downwind, but probably setting up the preventer/block on the boom is more trouble than it's worth.

Thanks.

sailing downwind without a kite or pole?

A whisker pole can be great help sailing downwind without a spinnaker, for getting a genoa projected out further.

My question: Does anyone have tips for a makeshift pole, or advice for sailing...

Re: available as crew in the US northeast, willing to travel

Hi Mike-- I'm pretty busy the next couple weeks, but it might be possible. I'll send a PM with some followup questions.

available as crew in the US northeast, willing to travel

I'm in the US northeast and would love to sail more, so I'm interested in helping out as crew for deliveries, etc. Probably only relatively short trips at first, but if I got to know someone well,...

Re: Is living aboard affordable?

I'm not a cruiser, but my impression is boats are pretty expensive as just a place to live, but a pretty cheap way to see the world, get to enjoy sailing, have the flexibility to move from place to...

Re: docking w/ inexperienced crew?

The guidance is that if you aren't confident without help, then call in on the radio in that you're arriving, so someone on staff can help.

Recently after following this procedure and docking...

Re: did my anchor slip? GPS attached

Yes, I love those pictures! I'd seen them awhile back and actually tried to dive on my anchor the first time I anchored (same place, a few weeks earlier). With the calm conditions and good holding...

Re: did my anchor slip? GPS attached

I agree with you and others that my anchor didn't drag, and that dragging in this case was unlikely.

But I'm with Jim! I'll take all the electronic help I can get to be more secure.
