Re: Is this true? Time under sail vs motor in Caribbean

There are always exceptions of course (the Pardees come to mind), but yes, the huge majority of costal cruising is done mostly under power. This is primarily due to convenience: the ability to go...

Re: Maryland Bans Recreational Boating for the Duration

I’m seeing tons of talk here about “illegal” and “mandatory”. The reality is that most of these are guidelines, meant to make the majority of people think twice before acting recklessly. They provide...

Re: Backwards zippers on foulies?

The “wrong” side you speak of is the standard in Europe. It’s only in the US that men’s zippers are standard on the right. I agree it takes some getting used to, but it’s not that hard if you drop...

Re: Show of hands: who actually chartered boats before buying?

I chartered many times before buying. I didn’t charter to test specific makes of boats, but I definitely wanted to get familiar with styles of boats, plus make sure that I had enough familiarity to...

Re: Do you pay for true LOA?

Yep, LOA: tip of anchor in pulpit to back of dinghy on davits. Honesty doesn't really come into it, because they come down and measure within the first day or two anyway.

Re: Most Sailors Can't Anchor Properly!

This was a really great and honest summary of the legit challenges.

But to many of the other posters: Education and reading are certainly important tools that every sailor should take advantage...
