Re: Garmin 521s or 541s ?

Incidentally, I have a new-in-box-never opened Garmin 541 for sale. If anyone is interested - PM.

Re: Mystery Chartplotter?

Google search for "hummingbird navigational system (https://www.google.com/search?q=hummingbird+navigational+system&nfpr=1)" brings up as a first result a user manual for "NS 10", which looks to be...

Re: Lying when Entering the US

You do not "wave" your passport. Your passport contains an RFID chip with all the information about you that is being read by a system and information is being saved and processed. It's no different...

Re: RTOFS Gulf Stream model, Saildocs & Viewfax

Incidentally, RTOFS data is available in PolarView without the need for a multi-step email/save/open process.
Click to select area, press "download", wait about 20 seconds and you should be good to...

Re: Sailboat Runs Over Divers

"Finding himself in the midst of divers" is the violation. He should not have "found himself" there. Those dive flags were on the surface all the time. It is a responsibility of a captain to post...

Re: Sailboat Runs Over Divers

There is usually no dive boat there - it's a popular shore dive location.
Ignoring dive flags is not a mistake - it's a violation of a law.

As a sailor and a diver, I certainly hope that other...

Re: Sailboat Runs Over Divers

I was planning to dive that bridge in the near future. It's one of the better dives in the area. As far as I know, divers always go there at high tide just for this reason - but still, all the more...

Re: CM93 Charts and Chartplotters

CM93 charts are a professional product by CMap. There are no individual user chartplotters that support them, afaik. But you can get a nice ECDIS system for about $50K that will work with CM93 charts...

Re: Offshore Navigator Question

Seamless connection of raster charts requires "quilting". I don't think Offshore Navigator is a quiliting product.
There are quite a few software options that will quilt raster charts (one is in my...

Re: Canadian BSB Chart

If you are using PolarView, it is a good idea to "re-add" the Charts directory after you copy new charts there.

PolarView will find and re-index updates to existing chart files. However, if...

Re: NDI Electronic Charts: Great Lakes & St. Lawrence

If these are really in BSB v3 (i.e. un-encrypted) - they will work with most applications that support BSB raster charts.

Re: Linux driver

drivers for BU-353 (or any other devices based on PL-2303 chipset) should be included in the kernel in most modern Linux distributions. I.e. - if your distro is within the last few years, it should...

I am sure you mean this as (hopefully friendly) poke in my direction :) I wish you were correct. I am an engineer (software, and occasionally - hardware, though not recently). Why Cruisers forum put...

Re: Raymarine Autopilot Questions

Can't recall what I found back then, but just now I looked at Raymarine specifications document for linear drive (they have it listed for both type 1 and 2, it's the same document). It shows amps and...

Re: Raymarine Autopilot Questions

This is published both in Raymarine documentation (for drive units and core packs - read each document to see specific voltage/amp specs) and in Q&A/support section of the web site.

I know...

Re: Boston to the Keys

FWIW BoatUS insurance has no such clause (especially if your boat is in Florida all the time, which is a type of coverage you can always buy).

Re: Canadian BSB Chart

Updates in EXE file is an unfortunate choice of delivery method.

I suspect that updates are self-extracting archives. If so - it may be possible to extract charts in a Windows machine (or virtual...

Re: The Pumpout Boat Crashed into My Boat

At least the pumpout boat didn't disintegrate near yours :) Can you imagine *that* disaster?
Sorry to hear about it, hope they are going to take care of this issue?

Re: Ferry runs aground in St. Thomas - 6 injured

I took ferries there more than once and as they round that south-east corner of STT, they usually cut way too close to shore or rocks, in fact they tend to take a narrower channel closer to the...

Re: CM93/3 <-> S57 comparison?

Technically, there is only one S-57. Versions refer to object definition and such - essentially high-level organizational features. Any S-57 viewer can load at least basic geometries from any S-57...

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

I.e. - they will always...

Re: Charts II: NGA - 2700 Charts

a set of 400 caribbean charts in full size png would take just about 100Gb (verified). a full set of these charts would be pushing a 1TB.

it seems unlikely that NOAA would "pull" them. these...

Re: CM93/3 <-> S57 comparison?

I think it's important to define "compatible" :)
Compatible as in "can be read by the same software" - no. CM93 is a different data format, and can't be read by software that supports S-57 (and...
