Re: Getting the main sail to drop into a lazy jack's pack

I have a tall sail that originally ran with slugs in a track in the mast.
I installed a Tides Marine track. You run the new (very slippery) track up the mast and install provided slugs on the sail....

Re: Boat on stands for 2 years, stands have dented into hull

No comment on the condition of your particular boat, but I had a Cape Dory 27 (sweetest Cape Dory design I think) on the hard for years during Maine's long off-season. The issue is how the jacks are...

Re: What are your worst fear sailing events

Good Garboard! sailors,

No disrespect, but do questions like this (and, for example, "what is the best boat for a newbie circumnavigation?) make this forum silly?
But it's true, hours or days of...

Re: Dinghy recommendation for SMALL boat...

It does not matter, so much, what size boat you are going to.
It matters what you have to cross to get to it, in what conditions, carrying how much load. If you'll be towing the dinghy, then a more...

Re: Help - water in diesel tank!

We've been there. How much diesel are we talking about, and how important is it to save the fuel? I'd say pump it all out and replace it. If you have good access to the inside of the tank, scrub it...

Re: Sock or furling? Asymmetric or code 0?

I've had experience with one code zero, and one sock. I think the code zero depends a a lot on the cut of the asym. Mine might have been too full. Pulling out the sail was a dream, but the furler...

Re: Backwards zippers on foulies?

European zipper protocol, I believe.

And what's with this forum? "What's best - wood or fiberglass?" "What's the best boat for a round-the-world?" "Why does a gust turn my boat?" But the...

Re: 32-36 ft full keel boat for Golden Globe Race

"I'm interested in finding out if there are any fast designs which fit the criteria but haven't been looked at yet..."

Is the approved list locked down? The Sea Sprite 34 (Bill Luders design)...

Re: Portable, Temporary Underway Heater

I mounted another Mr Buddy model low (low) on the door to the forepeak, on a Cape Dory 27. I kept a couple of ports cracked open. It worked well. As I recall it turned off if tipped enough. BUT in my...

You're terrific, Jammer.
How about starting a debate on anchors?

Re: Pressure water - overrated?

Totally agree, except maybe if there are five staterooms and a 2-dingy garage. The pressure line to the head leaked and I disconnected it. ELLA has engine-heated hot water and I haven't seen just how...

Re: Lets have a friendly discussion about the Rules of the Road

Capt Graham must have common sense, or a full-keel boat with attached rudder, or a lot of monofilament hanging on his dagger rudder and exposed prop, or six angry guys fast overtaking.

Re: Starting engine when batteries are dead

This will start an engine multiple times and holds a charge all season, unlike auto parts store units I've had.

Re: Anchor Riding Sails - Do They Work ?

I've used a small mizzen, pulled off to one side, on my Sea Sprite 34, but by chance I discovered another way. I bought a very neat "Lazy Bag" that lets you drop the main and zip it up, no flake no...

drogue with heave to?

I don't, so far, carry a drogue. I heave-to fairly frequently and typically show one kt, more or less, over the ground. I don't, so far, carry a drogue.
Question: if for some reason you'd rather...

Re: Midships ladder

I've had a Mystic ladder on two boats. It is excellent, but they don't have an easy way to release it if you're in the water.
Nautilus Marine Fabrication in Trenton Maine has made custom ladders,...

Heave To and Anchor

Has anyone hove-to in addition to anchoring, or can anyone give some experienced thoughts to it?
The case would be an anchorage that is more exposed than is comfortable, with strong winds. I thought...
