Re: How to remove “ghost lettering” from old vinyl stickers on gel coat

I did that same thing, tho the ‘background’ was a forest green stripe, and not a large white area. Once the lettering was removed, I used a rubbing compound on a buffing wheel. Took my time, went...

Re: Sealant for wires through coach roof

Agree with zstine. You’re asking for trouble in how you’ve laid it out. Figure out a clam shell approach and/or a piece of j conduit to better seal that hole.

Re: Florida Registration with CG Title

I’m not in FL so no experience or knowledge of your state’s requirements. But I would not have applied for the state registration *until* I had the USCG documentation in hand. My own boat is...

Re: HELP reinstalling diesel injectors

On my old Volvo diesel, copper washers were used for the fuel lines. Anything rubber would deteriorate, and copper is soft enough that they worked to seal the fuel line joint at the injector....

Re: Using the Canal du Midi to travel from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean

My girlfriend and I travelled the Canal du Midi in October 2016 on a luxury barge cruise. Fabulous time but what I wanted to pass along were a few observations from a boater’s perspective:

1....

Re: Change engine oil annually even if it's pristine?

I do it every 100 hours, or once a year. I consider it cheap insurance. It mostly costs me my time, as the oil is a relatively inexpensive item as far as boat stuff goes. My marina also has a ‘used...

Re: Rent slip before or after buying the boat?

From my experience, I’d suggest renting one now from the marina of your choice, and then subleasing the slip till u find the boat you want. You’ll probably have to get on a waiting list (again, my...

Re: Bail outs beteeen San Juan Straits and San Francisco

I think you’ve got all the info you need, so my ‘suggestion’ is that you thoroughly document your trip and report back to the forum on your experiences. I’m sure many of us would greatly benefit on...

Re: Best way to stick registration to dinghy

I used boatnumberplate.com to get a plate with my state reg numbers, then glued that on to my Achilles dinghy. It’s been 2 years now and every corner is still nice n tight.

Re: I heard there was an announcement about opening the US/Canada border on June 30

If you “heard” something, please provide a source, rather that just throwing out speculation. It’s not helpful at all. Thanks.

Re: underwater camera with live view?

Researchers use systems similar to what you’re after, to monitor fishing gear for fish behavior, among other activities. I used to work with some folks who did this. Heck, they had cables that ran...

Re: Name change on new to me documented vessel

I used a broker when I bought my documented 30’ boat five years ago. The broker put my boat’s new name in on the forms she filed for me with the change in ownership. All done in one action. Broker...

Re: Is a survey a must have with an older boat?

wow, a boat of that age and you want to forego a survey? You either must REALLY know boats, or do well in Vegas. Seriously, I think you are taking a huge risk, especially if the boat has sat in a...

Re: WiFi and Cellular extenders

I put in a cell extender on my boat, which I use in Puget Sound. There are towers all around so this gives me a really great, strong signal. This feeds into a Pepwave LTE router, which broadcasts...

Re: Achilles LSI Air Floor Model Reviews?

I bought a LSI290E in 2018 and have been super happy. In my case, the dinghy is stowed on top of the cabin, and until last year I had to pull it down and shove it back up manually. Weight was a...

Re: Thoughts on Amazon Fenders

West Marine has a bit of a reputation for being overpriced. For something as ubiquitous as a fender, I’d shop around, as you have done. But look at other vendors. Sure Amazon is plenty convenient,...

Re: The Aleutians Islands, Russia, and China?

There’s a great book on the war in the Aleutians. A little-known part of WWII.

Re: First trip through inner passage

Also recommend you check out Slowboat.com. They run flotilla groups up to AK from the San Juan’s. But they’ve put together many videos on their YouTube channel about running north. Highly recommend.

Re: Need US (WA state) coastal insurance after loss

Forget about Pemco. I was originally with them for boat insurance back in 2014. Then my marina (Edmonds) wanted me to have them listed as an “Additional Insured”, which I learned isn’t uncommon in...

Re: Is it usual for a marina to want to be added to insurance?

I can only attest to the 2 marinas I’ve had long term moorage in here in the PNW, and yes, it’s a requirement. Others have noted why. The challenge is that not all insurance companies will do that....
