Re: Length vs Beating, course vs pounding

Also worth considering rig and sail trim.

If you wind on the backstay you flatten the entry of the jib; likewise (depending on the rigging) if you bend the mast you flatten the main. Heave on the...

Re: How did you get from house to boat?

This is a great thread, thanks everyone. We have a 5 and 7 year old and are buying our first yacht this year, with a view to a year off next year.

I am in a slightly different place as I have...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Don't really get that ..

This is not me trying to control the broker. It's me trying to get a contract that allows me to rectify issues the surveyor finds, either through repair, or price...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Agree on codes of conduct...but of course the interests of customer and business are not entirely divergent (although this broker seems to think so). I understand the UK industry is tending towards...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Latest update:

Agreed all terms in a 20-minute call with the seller; drafted them together in an exchange of four emails that took 90 minutes; seller has now sent to the broker saying "do it like...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Thanks, valid but not in this case. I asked for photos of lockers and galley and specifically said "please show me the worst of it so I don't have surprises". He sent me dozens of photos; omitted...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Thanks for that! Both good steers, I am in touch with Olav and as a start, he has also confirmed what I thought about articles 4 and 5 of HISWA.

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

I should have said; I don't think it's worth travelling based on the asking price, when in the current market I believe boats are typically going for 10-15 pc less, unless you get a pretty solid...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Thanks, there's a number of reasons why this is (subject to survey) a good boat for us.

We agreed a price in principle based on not viewing, because I am in UK and the boat in Netherlands. I...

In terms of thermal layers here's my tuppence. You need a few thin layers that go on top of each other. Wear one, or three....

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Thanks, I am sure it's a fair point and I don't need to go into the details. The principle is clear - the survey should be as exhaustive as possible (and if the loo gets tested that's great), the...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Thanks, that's what I have done, and asked them to explain (1) why they have removed the relevant paragraphs; it turns out they HAVE used the HISWA document except the paragraphs that protect me (2)...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Very well put thanks.

I have just had another really snotty email from the broker. I had said the seatrial would be for full functional checks of every system; everything the surveyor can't do on...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Thanks, really useful. And in term of "material defects" rectification that conforms closely to the UK standard contract, and to the wording I proposed and was agreed by the seller.

Broker will...

Re: Help please! Dutch buying process/contract/survey

Another gremlin has just emerged. The seller is contracting to replace the standing rigging . I had understood this would be done professionally and therefore I would get an...

Re: Loose footed main or attached

Loose-footed.

If the slug/track is a failure point, you can make yourself a dyneema strop for a few bucks. Or just use a sail tie. That's what virtually all race boats do these days and I have...

Finding a surveyor abroad

Hi everyone. Looking at buying a yacht in continental Europe to bring home to UK - and I definitely want a survey.

I'd welcome any advice. Better to try to find a local surveyor (and take risk...

Re: A new adventure begins.

Sorry, I appreciate you're being kind, but I don't get the sense he does realise he screwed up.

I don't get a hint of "I'm so sorry for the cost I'm imposing on the environment / the taxpayer". I...

It's a great shame. Of course I am glad you are OK, but you did something irresponsible and silly in setting off; you have reaped the consequences and you have also inflicted consequences upon the...
