Re: In tank UVC sanitizer. Does anyone make it?

I have an inline 12V UV-LED (with activated charcoal pre-filter) filtration system on my boat as a point-of-use dedicated faucet in the galley. It turns on automatically when you turn the faucet on....

Re: Not saving Dashboard/tactics position

I had the same issue with 5.2 on Ubuntu. Then it occurred to me that I had not disabled the original Dashboard and Tactics plugins. Once I disabled those plugins, the Dashboard+Tactics plugins panes...

Re: GPS rollover, older GPS units & OpenCPN

I think that would be a great improvement, thanks for looking into it. (And yes, if the data in the NMEA stream is garbage it's reasonable to expect that Dashboard will produce garbage results as...

Re: GPS rollover, older GPS units & OpenCPN

I think that's really the crux of the matter - if Dashboard requires NMEA data to operate (and I understand better now why that would be the case and why it would be unreasonable to expect a...

Re: GPS rollover, older GPS units & OpenCPN

I agree different use cases have different needs. In either case, though, it can't be best practice for Dashboard to give erroneous data when no NMEA datastream exists...

Re: GPS rollover, older GPS units & OpenCPN

It could use ship position for lat/long instead of GPS. That way it would work when a GPS was available, where GPS position = ship's position, and it would work offline, when ship's position is...

GPS rollover, older GPS units & OpenCPN

Many users (like myself) may still be using older GPS units on their boats. Some of these units no longer provide an accurate date since the last GPS rollover on April 6, 2019. My GPS reports today's...

Re: all-rope lifelines and gates

I also like the look of the low friction rings, but for this application, they are ~10x the cost of the s/s thimbles.... so thimbles it is!

Re: all-rope lifelines and gates

That's a good point. On reflection though, our freeboard is about 1.5 m, too high to board directly from the dinghy to the side deck - though I have never tried, there not currently being gates in...

Re: all-rope lifelines and gates

Low-friction eyes I suppose would fulfill much the same purpose as thimbles. I can see the benefit for tensioning.

Re: all-rope lifelines and gates

This bit I've considered. The beamiest part of the boat is level with the hard dodger, which has a chrome handle on its roof intended for aiding in embarking as well as making ones way from the...

Re: all-rope lifelines and gates

Well... it's moot anyway because in the meantime I've already ordered the Endura 12... :whistling:

Okay fine, ya got me, I'm not actually worried about that... I'm mostly trying to justify...

Re: all-rope lifelines and gates

That's good advice. The gate would end up more or less abeam the hard dodger (which has a convenient chrome handle on the dodger roof to facilitate boarding, but which is also the narrowest point of...

all-rope lifelines and gates

I'm planning to replace old vinyl-covered SS lifelines with 1/4" Endura 12. My boat (a 35' sloop) currently has lifelines running from pulpit to pushpit running through several stanchions, but has no...

Re: OpenCPN connection to Shipmodul

If you run a software multiplexer you can connect both at the same time - I use kplex on linux, and can access my NMEA stream from OpenCPN and any other software that needs the data.

That said,...

Re: OpenCPN, Seatalk and COG CTW CMG etc.

I'm happy to re-install the SD128 once a new firmware is ready and help test it, so don't hesitate to reach out.

Cheers

Re: OpenCPN, Seatalk and COG CTW CMG etc.

My previous post should read 'declination' everywhere. The use of 'variation' was a typo; I had just refreshed my memory with a glance at Thomas Knauf's document on the SeaTalk specification, and he...

Re: OpenCPN, Seatalk and COG CTW CMG etc.

I should add that I did subsequently purchase a different SeaTalk <-> NMEA device, and that one works correctly (OpenCPN ownship points in the correct direction, COG matches the track, etc), evidence...

Re: OpenCPN, Seatalk and COG CTW CMG etc.

Hi Frank,

Rick Gleason added that edit to the wiki as a result of my experiences with the SD128, which were detailed on the page you linked to.

I'm no expert on either NMEA0183 or SeaTalk, so I...

Re: What type of rope is this?

Just looked up "Splicing Modern Ropes". Looks like it could be quite useful.

At any rate, I think the general consensus seems to be to use it as non-critical utility line or carve it up for fender...

Re: What type of rope is this?

The core is a plait of 8 strands. Each strand composed of about half white fibres and half beige fibres. I just took the torch to it, and the white fibres melted while the beige ones charred. I guess...

Re: What type of rope is this?

Hi Ann,

You're probably right that's what I'll have to do... I was hoping to short circuit the process by asking here! But if, as you suggest it could be, it was a non-standard rope from a...

Re: What type of rope is this?

I have already replaced it for exactly those reasons. Did not want to have it fail in use. My observation is that the boat's previous owner does not look to have skimped on anything in the past, so I...

What type of rope is this?

I just replaced my mainsail halyard and I'd like to identify the old line to know whether it might reasonably be repurposed.

It's a braided 8 mm rope with a red cover with blue, white, and black...

Re: OpenCPN Version 4.8.8 Released

Thank you to tdan & others who implemented this fix so quickly, it's much appreciated by anyone using OpenCPN in conjunction with a ShipModul multiplexer (among others, I'm sure).

Cheers!
