Re: Lake Union marina suggestions

Thanks. Sorry to have been gone so long. I had a couple books to get out, and was spending too much time on the forum.

Hard to believe there aren't any Seattle sailors on the forum who can...

Re: My boat's too big... I hear it all the time.

When we bought our 41 footer, it was the largest boat we felt we could comfortably handle as a couple. We fairly soon discovered that it was an easier boat to handle than the 37-foot racer/cruiser...

Re: Seriously, why do people like in mast furling?

Hello Dockhead. Just returning to the forum after a few years off to write a book. Nice to see I haven't really missed anything.

Folks, learning to shorten sail is a skill regardless...

Lake Union marina suggestions

We're moving our boat up to Washington state next summer, hoping to find a 50' slip for a sailboat. (Draft = 7'; Beam = 14') Preferably in walking distance to the Facebook campus. We are moving...

Re: alternator noise

I know! We keep thinking of this as "the new boat," but I've already had to replace the water heater and the oil cooler, and now I have to service the heat exchanger on the Yanmar, which is suddenly...

Re: 12 volt hot water

We have a dedicated shower across from the forward head. It has a small hatch directly above. If I lay my sun shower on the deck above, I'm able to run the hose down the hatch to where it does its...

Re: alternator noise

The alternator is a high capacity Balmar that was installed new on the boat in 2006. The engine has 700 hours on it.

Does that sound about right in terms of time for a service?

alternator noise

I have an Icom IC-M402 VHF, using it with a CommandmicII at the helm. The system seems to have developed a new problem. The radio works fine when I'm sailing, but when I'm motoring it has developed...

replacement lifesling pouch

I found a canvas maker in New Jersey who makes replacement pouches out of Sunbrella. He was able to match my canvas, and made a bag that should hold up a lot longer than the original equipment.

Re: Are Liveaboards Unwanted? Disliked? All over Everywhere?

Aye. The fundamental problem is that so many of the boats in Richardson Bay are not seaworthy. Some of those boats are inhabited, some are abandoned, and far too many are derelict. I've seen...

AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight with 15hp?

I'm thinking of buying an AB Lammina 9.5 AL Superlight, and I already own a 15hp four stroke. The dink specs recommend an 8hp and specify that the max engine would be a 15hp.

Anyone have...

Re: Are EPIRBs dead?

Agreed. Not only two devices, but two different systems. When I step up into the life raft, it will be with the EPIRB in one hand and the Inmarsat phone in the other. And I'll probably have SPOT...

Re: Safety Harness Purpose & Placement

A lot depends on how your shrouds are set up. You want to be able to go forward on the high side in the safest way possible. On which side of the shrouds would you normally walk when going forward?...

Re: Shower Curtain

A regular store-bought curtain works. We cut ours in half. Use the first half until you wear it out, then suddenly you have a new curtain.

Re: Is this the right sail for long term cruising

I'm going to agree with Dockhead's disagreement. The larger the sail, the more you need a sailcloth designed for large sails. The 400 laminate is specifically designed for sails upward of the 500...

Re: Difference Between Coastal And Blue Water Cruising

The most simple measure of a boat's cruising capability is its tankage. My boat carries 200 gallons of water and 100 gallons of fuel. That not only gives me offshore range, but also the ability to...

Re: Anchor Trip Line

Agreed. Last time I used a float on a trip line, a Bayliner came along and tied off to my float. Must have thought it was a mooring buoy.

That was years ago. Lesson learned.

Re: unburned diesel in exhaust

And the winner is..... crazyoldboatguy.

Turns out all I need is a turbowash.

The problem seems to be that I'm too close to excellent sailing, and I've generally got the sails up and the...

Re: unburned diesel in exhaust

Hey thanks. Oil level seems constant, so I'm hoping its an injector. The boat's back in harbor, and I've just left off the keys with my mechanic.

This sort of thing happens every time I get...

unburned diesel in exhaust

We haven't wind or appreciable sunlight for a few days, so this morning I ran the engine for 30 minutes at 1,000 rpm to charge the house bank. I haven't used the engine to charge for years because...

Re: Hunter sinks at Catalina due to bow cleat failure

This sort of innuendo is completely unfounded. Hunter uses integral backing plates that are molded into the deck.

Hunters are NNMA certified, which means they meet or exceed standards set by...

Re: How Do You Determine If A Boat Is "Seaworthy"?

These discussions always tend to be more about brand names than about actual boats, which should tell you something.

I've worked my way through a progression of keelboats, all sloops, starting...

Re: To Tack or Jibe?

On our boat we tend to gybe the jib first while we're heading dead downwind, momentarily sailing wing-on-wing. Then the main is centered, then we turn toward our new heading. It takes a bit longer...

Re: Dyneema Lifelines

+1. I had a topping lift fail once, and the spinnaker pole crashed through the wire lifeline, snapping it instantly. I suspect that a dyneema lifeline would have held in that situation, which would...
