Re: Wireless vs Wired B&G kits.

My 30 year old B&G system, Raymarine plotter, and radar were abandoning their utility. It was time to think NMEA 2000.

Discovering that essentially all newer DST sensors were made by Airmar and...

Re: Alternator belt for yanmar 3gm30f

Another issue occurs when owners install high output alternators that require more horsepower without considering belt rating. On my boat, alternators that required 5 hp at max were being driven with...

Re: kWh to Ah

Ha! We read the same news articles!

No, but I am trying to wrap my head around the relationships and equivalencies.

My boat is long and thin, has a 10.1 knot hull speed, carries 250 gallons of...

Re: kWh to Ah

So, one kWh about eauals 83 Ah, again at 12 volts.
(as an aside, I wonder why the tradition is to measure batteries, at least lead acid, in Ah instead of kWh. Simplified calculations?)

kWh to Ah

Am I correct in calculating that a 264 kWh battery is the equivalent of 22,000 amp hour battery at 12 volts?

Re: Icom ic-m55 won't transmit

ICOM has a list of mics they still support. I sent mine in (2) and they were repaired at a low price.

Re: BC Cruising, Desolation in off season -- bolt holes, other guidance?

I would pay attention to potential debris issues following the earthquake and morraine collapse in Bute Inlet. Not a reason not to go, but will certainly require some thought and attention.

Re: Jedi new battery finished

Wonderful work, Jedi. Thanks for being a pioneer.

My boat is the little sister of yours, Sundeer 56, with the two battery compartments in line over the keel. Each of my two traction batteries is...

Re: Killer whales launch ‘orchestrated’ attacks on sailing boats

I don't think one can deny that humans have caused a precipitous decline of fish in the ocean, and increase is pollution. It's also a mistake to underestimate the intelligence of Orca. There is a...

Re: Watermaker in cold seas

There are a lot of reasonably priced air/liquid and liquid / liquid heat exchangers on Amazon.

Re: Broken down in Anacortes with cooling issue, help appreciated

You are to be congratulated. That was a difficult job, and a bit harrowing to get to where you could deal with it. You now have a system that's refreshed, and without the bit of kelp I'd bet was...

Re: Lavac pump outlet joker valve

I just rebuilt my Lavac pump. I have the same issue with a bit "back flow," of dark water, and think neither the joker valve nor flapper is designed to be 100 percent water tight. Still, I think it...

Re: Tachometer and voltmeter "bounce."

Bad ground. Gauges on my boat used an independent, though shared wire to engine as ground. I replaced many units, until oldtimer told me to clean all ground contacts at each gauge, at engine, any...

Re: Solar Panel Install (higher voltage)

Be wary of Amazon … I was shipped a breaker unsuitable for this voltage, tho it was represented to be so.

Re: Solar Panel Install (higher voltage)

I've done it both ways, and it is nicer to have a breaker between panels and controller. I used the 80 volt DC circuit breaker. Remember that your chosen controller will limit watts to 650W.

Re: input on replacing knot meter and depth sounder on Caliber 28

I'm replacing my old water speed indicator (B&G) with a new DST800. The new unit will provide waterspeed, depth and temperature to a NMEA 2000 network, allowing me many options for display.

The...

Re: New old boat in need of updated electronics

What RudyKruger said. I went 2,000 miles to Alaska and back from Anacortes with this setup, running Navionics on iPad and Opencpn on a Mac as backup. They alwauys agreed, by the way. He didn't...

Re: Victron Smart Battery Sense.

That explains my situation. I bought mine before then, when even retailers did not know of the problem.

And I'll mention one other issue with Victron, briefly because it needs its own thread:...
