Re: Cell phone for Canada

Visiting by car twice in 2016, once Montreal and then into the Gaspe peninsula. We had Virgin Mobile with no Canada option. For the first trip, I bought an ATT Go phone with a pricey prepaid plan...

Re: BOat Broker in Rhode Island Massachusetts Area

Jim Spiro at Narragansett Sailing brokerage in Barrington, RI, 401-250-5496. Jim checked my boat out thoroughly before agreeing to take the listing. He had it sold the first week, after two showings;...

Re: Volvo Penta Rebuild Woes - Any Ideas?

Hi

I have the 2030C and have just finished rebuilding it...waiting for warmer weather to reinstall it here in New England. I hope they did not tell you they replaced the sleeves, as this engine...

Re: Volvo Diesel's

Mark speaks the truth. I am rebuilding an engine and yes, the parts are pricey. However, they aren't any worse than Yanmar or anybody else. Stuff costs money.

Re: ABYC and fuel hose

I'm looking at my July 2015-2016 ABYC standards book and Standard H-33, Diesel Fuel Systems, revised July, 2015, section 33.14 "Fuel Distribution, Return and Transfer Systems"

subsection 33.14.7:...

Re: A most difficult decision.

Best wishes on your recovery. I have two bad knees and I find I am stronger and in less pain in the summer, when I am on the boat all the time, than the winter. The boat both forces me to use my...

Re: Dec15 Giveaway: Mantus

I already have a brand-spanking-new 45 lb Mantus, still in its crate in the garage. And a chain hook. But I don't have these cool things:

Re: The Evolution of "Condomarans"

I have one, and I am in love with it. It is not the most beautiful boat to my eye, but then I don't like the look of catamarans in general. Tris are much more graceful (I had an F-24 for a few...

Re: Deck Hull Joint, What Is This?

I had leaks on a previous boat. We removed the toe rail and drilled out about a million rivets (conservative estimate). Redid everything, rebedded with 3M 4200. No more leaks for at least the...

Powerboater Mental Health

I never understood this until I married a recreational fisherman. Sailboaters prefer other boats to take their stern, so we don't lose our momentum or deal with a wake. Fishermen prefer other boats...

Re: Defender Marine Price More Than Double Competition

I was curious about your comments and tried to find a US vendor with a far better price. I couldn't. I am not trying to "justify them charging double". You have presented no evidence that there is a...

Re: Defender Marine Price More Than Double Competition

You are not including shipping to the US and any duty. The more realistic comparison would be to other US vendors. On this item, Defender is only $5 cheaper than West Marine, which is a very low...

Re: Active Capt / Defender SSB special

I think it wants a 30 or 35 amp power supply. I needed to buy a power supply last winter and checked the 802's specs to be sure I got one big enough for the day when I got the radio.

I had a whip...

Re: Active Capt / Defender SSB special

A64, did you pull the trigger? Mine arrived today. I will set it up at the house for now, so I can play and reacquaint myself with HF. It's been a while. I had an m700 years ago, and clipped it for...

Re: Entry with US State registration in French Caribbean Islands?

In 1992, I was in the area on my Florida registered boat. I skipped Guadeloupe because all the guide books at the time said they will give you all sorts of grief if you come in a state-registered...

Single Men Living Aboard and Cruising... an honest look.

"Fairer but less adventurous", huh...where did you go to school, again? 😛

Boat sounds better to me, but I'm old now, and perhaps less adventurous...

Mine are 15 years old. I recently replaced all the raw water hoses on both engines (volvos, in my case) and planned to replace these, too. However, they are n excellent condition and the little...

Re: ASA or U S sailing certification

Hi,

I teach ASA 101 and 103, among others. At my school they are each 3 day courses. I think two days is a little short for students to learn what they are supposed to learn. My two cents...

Re: How Long to Get Certificate of Documentation

It takes far too long, but it is not analogous to a car or state boat registration...a more apt analogy would be to a car title, which in my state takes a month or so.

We bought our boat in April,...

Re: Shelf Life of Engine Spares - ???

We replaced our saildrives' bellows this spring. They were 14 years old; Volvo recommends a 7 year replacement interval and the PO hadn't done it. You will read on CF that these bellows last forever....
