Re: Crazy high generator hours: any ideas why?

The generator hours sound normal to me for an ex charter boat in the Caribbean. Like Jeannius I would be suspect of the engine hours. Not going to mention names but the last charter boat I captained...

Re: STRAY CURRENT Issues, need help!

This can be a difficult concept to grasp. When thinking about corrosion you need to think in terms of electron flow, not electrical flow like we usually consider for dc current. The electrons...

Re: Common Ground Wiring

8 AWG minimum size for bonding. 6 AWG if it's part of a lightening protection system. Green or Green with a yellow stripe. This is for normally non-current carrying conductors in a bonding system.

Re: Breaker by shore power inlet serves as main breaker?

The answer to the original question is no, you don't need to add another main breaker as long as you are using a double pole at the inlet.

As Bowdrie mentioned, use an ELCI(US term) or RCD (Europe...

Re: Standing rigg on FP Lavezzi with unknown age: advise&help what to do

The toggle fork in the 4th photo on your original comment shows a pretty clear crack. A rigger really needs to go over all of those fittings carefully.

Re: Stray Current found - need fix advice

Now we're on the same page Jedi. I hadn't caught how the bonding connection was made, but reading back through the thread I caught it this time.

"The installer wired the cooler bonding plates to...

Re: Stray Current found - need fix advice

Ok, I called an expert, Bob at Boatzincs their corrosion engineer. He confirmed what I thought, the negative shift is not stray current and is actually a favorable condition. He said the reasons for...

Re: Stray Current found - need fix advice

I'm absolutely not here to argue. OP asked for a reason to keep it bonded, I explained the reasons we bond. I also think the diagnosis is wrong, I don't think a more negative shift is a sign of stray...

Re: Stray Current found - need fix advice

You seem to have missed that I literally quoted the OP's reference cell measurements in my comment.

Perhaps an Electrical Engineer can explain how a stray current problem will cause the reference...

Re: Stray Current found - need fix advice

There are several reasons we bond, not just to prevent the risk of AC electrical shock if an ungrounded AC conductor shorts against the DC negative system as Jedi alluded to. The other reason is in...

Re: Bronze Thru Hulls Causes Saildrive Corrosion?

No, that's not true.

The anode on the sail drive will protect the sail drive from galvanic corrosion, no matter what type of through hulls you have.

Ideally your sail drive is isolated...

Re: Double or triple tapping 110 breakers?

Yes, I know lots of boats and houses daisy chain their outlets, which also has the advantage of allowing you to make the first one GFCI which then protects all the downstream outlets. This suffers...

Re: Double or triple tapping 110 breakers?

And therein lies the problem with nuisance trips that I mentioned. Two 15 amp outlets running off a single 15 amp breaker. Why not make it 3, or 4 if you can fit the wires on the terminal? It's all...

Re: Double or triple tapping 110 breakers?

But that's not on your overcurrent protection. I believe the ABYC is referring to battery terminals, and possibly other junctions that are already protected with the proper overcurrent protection.

Re: This has to be galvanic corrosion, correct?

Re-read my quote that you posted. I said it needs electrical contact, not necessarily physical contact. That seems to be the same thing you are saying.

It's why we use galvanic isolators. You're...

Re: This has to be galvanic corrosion, correct?

I haven't been in the boat, I have no idea what is bonded to the keel bolts in it. 14 years is plenty of time for owners to do all kinds of strange partial bonding. That's why these things need in...

Wish I were closer to Panama City, I'm an ABYC Corrosion and Electrical tech and could help you but I'm about 8 hours away.

It will take more than just those pictures to figure out what is going...

Re: yanmar 4jhe - white smoke and oil sheen on water

That's normally a sign of unburnt fuel/excess fuel. There can be a few different causes. Could be low compression (worst case), clogged air filters, or faulty fuel injection. I'd start with the...

Re: Seizing Wire as Hose Clamp / Clamptite

I don't think you can forget the ABYC, and I believe you acknowledge it in your first statement. Most surveyors are inspecting boats to ABYC and USCG standards, so they matter even for used boats....

Re: What year is my boat? HIN vs USCG Reg?

Common issue. The last two numbers in the HIN are the model year. The letter and number just before the model year are the month and year it was being built. Generally model year is the accepted year.

Re: Air leak in Fuel Line Universal M25 (Diesel)

If you're getting air in the fuel system it is before the injector pump, on the low pressure side. Leaks on the high pressure side leak fuel out, not air in.

Start at the tank and check every...

Re: How do I test for AC fault leakage?

You can clamp the entire shore power cord which will measure the leakage through the water back to shore. To measure leakage on the grounding conductor you need to clamp on the grounded and...

Re: Weird Nuisance Trips

Most common cause for this is that you have a grounded neutral somewhere on the boat. It's normal in a house, you ground the neutral at your breaker panel, so sometimes house electricians get on...

It's been 22 years since I sold my boat with its old MD2b, but from what I remember they are individual cylinder blocks and pretty easy to change out one at a time. Just a matter of using the right...
