Re: Single Men Living Aboard and Cruising... an honest look.
What has happened to Peter "Plukky" Lukursky of Youtube's Sailing into Freedom? I was sure this board would have a thread on the disaster. Both sides of the catamaran developed a largish hole after... |

Re: Boat as an investment?
A very reasonable question that I have asked. Perhaps better phrased along the lines of "which boats hold their value better". I didn't read the answers here because I am sure that most pounced on... |

Re: Fort Myers - Damage ?
I lost some shingles and car/fence damage from falling trees and branches. Ceiling damage from leaking roofs. Expected worse though. They made it sound like a planet leveler. Seems the northern... |

Re: Will Sailboats Still Be Made in 30 Years?
Lithium is much smaller and lighter and more expensive. So far, it has not significantly changed the math on solar energy to my knowledge. Cheap panels have made an enormous impact of course. |

Re: Premium brand MPPT controllers - is he right?
My Outback is exceedinly easy to program though many people will never really need to change charge parameters. Schneider also makes a reliable charge controller....I think. All the aforementioned... |

Re: Ballast - Lead or other suitable heavy weights
That is a lot of weight. I might ask a battery recycling place since you don't need pure lead. Batteries are usually lead-calcium. |

Re: Cost for bottom paint
All those prices are great until I get to $300/mt for being on the hard? I thought being on the hard was usually considerably cheaper than being in a slip with decent services. $45 to pressure... |

Re: Steel hull construction
How long have you been looking? My memory seems to recall some fabulous deals on sailboats that wound up in Africa before the owner decided to "cut and run". Of course Africa is a gigantic continent.... |

Re: Steel hull construction
Try you tube channel Sailing Emerald Steel. They built a 38' steel boat from scratch. There was an absolutely tremendous amount of welding done. They have now cruised for over 30 years. There is an... |

Re: Cost for bottom paint
Prepping and painting a boats bottom is pretty close to one of the worst jobs I have ever partaken in. Nobody has chimed in and called it a walk in the park. Not much you can do except gather more... |

Re: AGM or Wet Cell
I'd guess that over 95% of the lead acid batteries are of the lead calcium variety. The calcium lowers the self-discharge rate and water usage. Calcium is also very cheap. High performance solar and... |

Re: Good containers for long term storage of epoxy?
So........paint cans. That makes sense though I have seen paint cans that did not achieve a good enough seal to last for years. After painting the house, I bought another gallon for touch-up etc.... |

Re: Powering an electric dive compressor
One way to look at it. Another is the reduced wear and tear on the main generator. I would get the gas engine over the electric motor. I don't plan on using marina slips at all. Like staying at a... |

Re: Powering an electric dive compressor
It could also be noted that at least one scuba tank compressor manufacturer sells their gas powered model for the same amount as their electric. Memory recalls a modest engine.....4 or 5 hp. Wish... |

Re: Powering an electric dive compressor
Can you take your generator to a store that sells the scuba tank compressor? What is on paper doesn't always match the real world. Your challenge is the compressor start up surge. If that proves... |

Re: Powering an electric dive compressor
It probably is easy to use. My system came with a MATE that I seem encouraged to program over the Flexmax. People tell me I am lucky in that "everything is prewired". Having done basic... |

Re: Powering an electric dive compressor
I'm a regular at a solar board occupied with mostly professionals. The only negative I have ever seen posted about Outback is by me. Their plethora of manuals can be confusing for the layman. I have... |

Re: Powering an electric dive compressor
I certainly agree that trying to regularly fill scuba tanks from solar batteries is asking for problems. It would take an almost inconceivable solar set-up on a boat. The German Type XXI... |

Re: True state of charge with solar panels connected?
He is referring to battery capacity as "platage". For some reason he likes to talk to solar newcomers as if they are solar pros. Gets pissy if you question that proclivity. We are going to arm... |

Re: True state of charge with solar panels connected?
It is going to take a bit to get a handle on how well solar is normally going to do for you. Depending on the temperature, fully charged batteries will show ~12.7-12.8 volts. Anything over that is a... |

Re: Solar design - 12 Volt or 24 Volt?
"Do these household Rules of Thumb also apply onboard? 12V 1,000W max 24V 2,000W max 48V 4,000W max" Systems over 48 volts are quite rare I believe. A 3000 watt system would clearly realize... |
