Re: 🇳🇱Dutch citizen wanting to register a boat in the Netherlands - HOW?

I don't know if it is a general rule in EU, but for new boats it should be possible to obtain a temporary registration, valid for 60 days (or 90, not sure), from a consulate of Netherlands in France,...

Re: Buying THIS rotten fisher 46 for refit to cruise high latitudes?

We are sailors, and we are dreamers. But there are two categories of us: mostly dreamers and mostly cruisers.

The former ones have deep inside a reluctance to sail into the sunset, and take all...

Re: Fixing A Leaky Compass

I have filled mine with Johnson baby oil. A bubble remained, but as long as the compass is mounted in vertical position it is not visible.

Re: AIS starting from scratch what's best way to go at the moment?

There are many opinions regarding the need of a receiver or transmitter. Some sailors appreciate to see what is around (and has AIS), in order to avoid them, others appreciate to be visible for the...

Re: Four crew rescued from disabled sailboat off coast of Nova Scotia

Me personally I read quite often smart editorials, but I select the sources... not mainstream ones. But I agree with you, the times when the journalists were the 4th power in the state are gone.

Re: Four crew rescued from disabled sailboat off coast of Nova Scotia

A friend journalist told me once that the smart journalists write editorials, the slick ones are into sport, and the rest of the subjects (like sailing) arereserved for dumb ones.

Re: Our first boat please provide input.

Liveaboard, especially for first timer couples, means IMHO standing headroom in the saloon, spacey toilet with warm water and shower, good thermal isolation, large cockpit and (at least) two separate...

Re: Kas Turkey to Thessaloniki Greece

Welcome and nice trip! I doubt that the economic grief of Greece motivated them... probably their relatives that were selling souvenirs and gyros contributed more... Do not try to judge Greeks...

Re: Kas Turkey to Thessaloniki Greece

I would not worry so much about the weather. I would just plan 10-12 hours hops and wait for the weather windows, in any month. Last time when I checked in in Myrina, the moment the police came to...

Re: Never sailed and want to learn

IMHO sailing is about three things: 1. Mastering the techniques (lots of ropes around) 2. Experience and miles and 3. Attitude (you are absolut god on your boat, you have to solve ALL the issues,...

Re: What should you not miss when sailing the Mediterranean ...

Sailing in Med in winter is very pleasant, if you are not on a schedule. Taverns are nice, the people are friendly, the quality of the services is way higher than in summer. Just hang around till the...

Re: Should I buy a boat that has had extensive hull repairs?

When you buy a boat, you get what you see/survey and assume some risks. Any risk has its value. For example, repairing a crack in the hull might cost 2000 $. If you estimate that there is a 50%...

Re: Replace inboard engine with two outboards?

I've had a 22 footer with an 4.5 outboard fixed aft. Perfect for harbour maneuvres and flat sea, pushed the boat with hull speed at half the power, but when there were 0.5 meter waves it was a...

Re: Newbie questions, crossing the Atlantic

Have you thought about buying a 20-30 year old 27-29 footer in Mediteranean and sail it around for 1-2 years? If you find a well mantained one, it might depreciate very little in 2 years and after...

Re: eBay sale went south

ebay is very buyer-oriented. If in doubt (like your case) they will favor the buyer. Good luck anyway!

Re: Charter company claims we damage boat

I've heard several stories like yours in Croatia, from minor things like gas bottles half empty, to cracks in the keel. A detailed inspection should be made at the beginning, including diving... or...

Re: Should I fix or sell my boat?

I am a fan of doing things one by one, while sailing. On my opinion the resale value of your boat is close to zero, and with a minimum investment you can make it sail during the day: standing rigging...

Re: Yanmar 20GM20 starts but wont run
