Track Playback

I've been looking through OpenCPN and various plug-ins and haven't come across this yet. Maybe someone else has?

I'd like to take a recorded track and "play" it in OpenCPN, ideally, with a way of...

Re: Oswego to Federal Lock Troy, NY

Forgot to mention in my earlier post: Don't plan on running in the canal after dark. There is no lighting and it's easy to stray from the channel and run aground.

Re: Oswego to Federal Lock Troy, NY

I just did the trip from Watkins Glen to the Hudson River in 5 days in early September without any issues. The key is to stay flexible and not sweat over a delay and to take advantage of the...

Recommendations & Local Knowledge

Hi, Everyone!

I'm hoping to be able to enter my boat in the Marion-Bermuda race in 2021. Logistically, this means I need to move my boat through the Erie Canal and down the Hudson River to get to...

SSB Antenna Question - GTO-15 Connector?

I recently replaced the backstay on my Alberg 35 and, rather than putting insulators in the backstay, I procured a GAM Split Lead SSB antenna that "wraps around" the backstay. The antenna is fed with...

Re: Boating up the St Lawrence - currents/horsepower required?

We did the upper portion of the St. Lawrence from Kingston to Alexandria Bay in our Alberg 35 with a 30 HP diesel in August. The current is very manageable and not overpowering in that portion of the...

Re: Buying Used 36’ Sailboat –first boat; purchase questions

I'm of the mindset that everything is negotiable. Here's another option...

Given the timing, do the survey and inspections and use that data to tender an offer with a percentage of the sale price...

Re: Battery Monitor installation question

My opinion is that the shut should be on the negative side unless installation instructions specifically state it can be installed on the positive leg.

That said, your goal should be to put the...

Re: NY canals single handed

I've been through the NY Canals several times going between Lake Ontario and various Finger Lakes. Plan to venture west to Lake Erie next year and east to the Hudson a couple years after that. We...

Re: CQ'ing all Hams and SSB users

I'll vouch for hamstudy.org. Used it to study for my Extra a couple months ago. Very helpful! If you're pressed for time, you can use this tool to study to the test and fill in the gaps that interest...

Re: Pearson Triton mast beam bulkhead removal

You need to worry not only about static loads (mast compression), but also dynamic loads imposed by gusts, waves, etc.

In this case, the bulkhead serves not just as a compression post to transfer...

Re: Is Singlehanding >24 Hrs. Morally Wrong?

You won't be cited unless you get caught, and most of the time you don't get caught until after there's been an accident. At that point, your indiscretions (real or perceived) will be used against...

Re: Is Singlehanding >24 Hrs. Morally Wrong?

Had a chance to look things up:

Underlined portions of the quote imply it must be a human lookout that can see, hear and think.

"...all available means appropriate..." covers the use of...

Re: Is Singlehanding >24 Hrs. Morally Wrong?

I don't have a copy on hand to reference the exact paragraph at the moment, but COLREGs require all vessels to maintain a "proper lookout". The helmsman (or, for that matter, others that are...

Re: Is Singlehanding >24 Hrs. Morally Wrong?

As illustrated by the posts above, I think "Is it moral?" is an incorrect, an perhaps even nonsensical, question. Asking if something is moral questions whether the intent is corrupt or evil. I don't...

Re: Opecpn Gps for Mac

I'm running High Sierra (10.13.3) without issues using the BU-353S4 on both MacENC and OpenCPN.

The difference might be that I configured all of these under Sierra prior to upgrading to High...

Re: Opecpn Gps for Mac

I use the same GPS with my Mac and can echo the satisfaction you've read from the others.

Be aware that the GPS has a magnet in the base, so don't put it too close to a compass.

One thing I do...

Re: Help me Chart a course

Hi, CapnElan!

Don't underestimate US Power Squadron courses. For navigation, they can take you from being a GPS user all the way to celestial navigator. Their marine electronics series is pretty...

Re: Can I "hang" a swim platform off the transom?

Just a thought, but have you considered something similar to ladder jacks on your existing boarding ladder to make it a more suitable stairway for your dog? It won't necessarily help with transfer of...

Re: Clean Monel potable water tank or replace???

Ditto what the others have said. Cut ports for clean-out/access in your tanks. Monel is worth gold and is very resistant to corrosion - better than stainless, I'm told.

I have an Alberg 35 and all...

Re: Offshore Nighttime Watch Guidelines

Hi, Jeff:

No recommendations, but just a short bit on how I've done it on my offshore passages. On each occasion we sailed with a (total) crew of 4 or 5. With 5, the skipper has the option of not...

Re: Paper Charts, Plotting for practice

I'm an instructor for the Power Squadrons and also love to "play" with the paper charts to see how close I am to the electronics on my boat. It's fun and it's practical and it's prudent for 'when'...

Re: YANMAR 60 TURBO idles but dies at higher RPMS

Had a similar problem and it was a loose clamp on a fuel line. Diesel would idle fine, but would stutter and stall at higher RPM when the fuel pump started sucking air through the loose clamp.
