Re: Dingy Horsepower, need minimum weight!
I used a 7'7" soft bottom inflatable with 2.5hp 4 stroke OB. This worked for me for 4 years of sailing around the world. I love that I could set it on the inside of the dinghy with the dinghy along... |

Re: Watkins 36C For A Circumnav
I can't help you much with the Watkins. Except a quick search show the Sail Area to Displacement is 12.83, if that is correct I wouldn't expect it to sail much in lighter winds. To give you an idea... |

Re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke outboard
I sailed halfway around the world with a 4 stroke Tohatsu 6hp as the main power for my Alberg 30. It was great until I needed parts in Indonesia, they could only get parts for the 2 stroke Tohatsu's.... |

Re: Battened or not battened Main Sail
What kind of boat? Where are planning to sail? Do you race? Do you have a lot weather helm? I sailed around the world with 2 full battens and 2 partial. I don't remember ever having to patch a batten... |

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds
I went around the world in a Alberg 30, 9000lb boat. Powered by a 6hp outboard. It was good enough for the Panama Canal at 5.2kts. 13hp should be fine. |

Re: What happens to all the wannabees?
I don't know if I ever fit into this category. But I was a member before I left to go sail around the world in October 2019. I returned to the Chesapeake June 2023, having completed a single handed... |

Re: Taking an Island Packet 29 far Offshore?
The boat is certainly capable. Someone sailed a catalina 27 around the world, Web Chiles sailed a Moore 24 around the world. I've sailed an Alberg 30 around the world. The first thing I would want to... |

Re: Alberg 30 as "bluewater" cruiser
I'd say I ended up between 45-50K all in on the boat and cruising gear by the time I departed. |

Re: Harken furler drum cracked
This is a known weakness on harken furlers. I had this happen to me on Harken MKIV unit 1, about 100nm west of bermuda. The sail fully deployed in squall, with 40-50kts of wind with out the drum... |
