Re: Forget Covid, Fukushima is what you should be really worried about

I'm sorry Dockhead, I have to disagree with you again. With COVID I don't believe the problem is/was lockdown; it was people not adhering to it for a short period followed by a good plan that people...

Re: OCEANPLANET ENERGY GIVEAWAY - ends Oct 12

I'm currently building a small boat I hope to take camping and a small, built-in solar panel for small...

Re: Gate Valves - Care and Feeding Thereof

Agreed

Also, Molykote aka antisieze is really good for keeping stems lubricated if anyone is stuck with gates at the moment. Better than oiling or anything else really.

Re: Gate Valves - Care and Feeding Thereof

I don't disagree with the standard as it applies to the general level of knowledge when it comes to personal craft. I only take exception to the statement, "any vessel." That's a lot of vessels. I...

Re: Gate Valves - Care and Feeding Thereof

I respectfully disagree. There is more to the choice of valve than just above or below the waterline. However, it does seem the most sensible option for small cruising vessels to have ball valves...

Re: Gate Valves - Care and Feeding Thereof

You can get any kind of valve with any kind of trim. Get the right trim for the environment. You got fancy petroleum industry valves because you were looking too hard for "the best" when what you...

Re: Sailing Zatara causing some Pacific ripples

Don't do it wingssail...Don't bite...Let it go...It's just not worth it. Notice the tactics of putting words in other people's mouths and fighting for a side that is then denied. It'll just leave...

Do not respond! Unlike the Novel Coronavirus (SARS-COV-2), trolls eventually disappear when you ignore them long enough

Re: Sailing Zatara causing some Pacific ripples

So many of you are getting caught in the trap of legitimizing ignorance. You already know that nothing you say with break through the thick skulls of people like NorthernMac so please stop trying. ...

Re: DIY retrofit electric minnkota saildrive

I think Glen-L sells DIY plans for an inboard electric motor. If you're set on that route you should take a look. More complicated than a trolling motor but relatively simple and cheap compared to...

Re: A Canadian Tech company wins National Award.

I agree with the general consensus above but would like to play devil's advocate for a moment. Though this may not have any practical application for a typical cruising boat, the broader effect will...

Re: DIY generator off 1GM10

You could get creative with the cooling water. Instead of just dumping the heat to atmosphere, you could recover some amount of it for water heating or even home heating in the winter by adding a...

Re: Air con for heat in winter?

I would be interested to know what the difference in power consumption is at a 15 F difference in temperature meaning:

power consumption in cooling on an 85 F day with interior temperature at 70 F...

Re: Air con for heat in winter?

No problem. I'm happy to have a discussion . The numbers you are comparing are for maximums. A heat pump system is usually built to be able to still heat in freezing temperatures. This...

Re: Air con for heat in winter?

Heat pump mode doesn't inherently use more power. It may seem like more power but you have to look at the temperature differentials. If you like 70 F and it's 90 F, you need to lower the temp by 20...

Building a small boat navigation system

I've been trying to think of a project to do with my 12 y.o. son that we would both be interested in doing. He is very into his screens and videogames where I am more of a hands on, doing things,...

Re: Water dispenser for the chest fridge?

It's much bigger, but the Brita fridge dispensers work very well, have a filter, and the one I have has lasted several years so far with no signs of fatigue. They come in different sizes but are...

Re: Headsail vs no headsail, efficiency

Sounds like a cool design project. I've been fascinated and obsessed with yacht/ship design for almost 25 years (I'm only 36). I went so far as to minor in it in college. As long as you do the...

Yet another Navy vet...
I bought a cheap 30 footer when I was enlisted in the mid 2000s. Literally sailed it until the keel fell off. Not because it was fast and I had a sense for the elements but...

Re: Who’s pumped for a heat pump—-> this guy!

You could put a small exhaust fan in the engine room that will pull some of the boats conditioned air through it. Again, more demand put on the heating/cooling unit but ain't nothin' free. If you...
