Re: OCPN Poor man's radar and more...

I've been spending a bit of time here: https://forums.parallax.com/discussion/104629/project-laser-range-finder-big-distance

There are some pretty good discussions on DIY stuff, some of which they...

Re: OCPN Poor man's radar and more...

Hi Dan,
Thanks for responding. I'll answer you as best I can. You said:

Forgive me if I wasn't clear, Dan. I tend to ramble when I get inspired. If I could, I would heavily edit the preceding...

Re: OCPN Poor man's radar and more...

Forgive me, but I have changed my mind. I want to dig into the basics before I move on.

The basic idea (very simplified) of a laser rangefinder is to bounce cohesive light off an object and...

OCPN Poor man's radar and more...

The following is a rough idea to enhance the capabilities of OCPN. Criticism and contributions are welcome. After I lay out the basic idea, I will follow up with some applications that I believe...

Re: ENCs not showing on upgrade to 4.8.4 from 4.6.1

SOLVED

I downloaded a fresh copy, performed a clean install and then used the default directories for my charts. All is well. I'm reasonably certain the upgrade was performed from a corrupted...

Re: ENCs not showing on upgrade to 4.8.4 from 4.6.1

Thanks bnc,

But what I was talking about, as a remedy to the situation, was a clean download and install as opposed to an upgrade.

Like I said, my internet had a series of problems the day I...

Re: ENCs not showing on upgrade to 4.8.4 from 4.6.1

Hey Pavel,

Thanks for checking on this. I had a problem with my internet on the day I did the upgrade. Could have little to do with either of us. I'm thinking the download might be corrupted after...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

The only agency (of which I am aware) that can legally board and inspect a US documented and flagged vessel without probable cause or a warrant is the Coast Guard or other Agency exercising...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

Hi Montanan,

Your query, ...is superfluous. The context of this situation was that of a declared national disaster. These matters are already paid for through federal taxation. I do not want to...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

Hmm...

After I supplied the legal citations, I haven't heard back from anyone that consider driving or traveling in the US a 'privilege' of citizenship.

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

Actually, if you have your boat insured, liability is usually included, at least in the US. Shalom shalom. Perfect peace Rabbi.

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

Mike, my boat liability coverage is $41 per annum. Btw, I think you were talking about, 'Uninsured Motorist'.

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

I used to know an old pool hustler. He drove a new Cadillac DeVille convertible and had never had a Driver's License or insurance in his life. He would carry bookmarked law books in his car to show...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

Thanks Roger, I am to a certain degree.

The problem is that it is a numbers game where the State rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars to break the law. It's all politics. You know, Poly from...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

The RIGHT to travel is defined herein by numerous US Supreme Court and Federal Appeals court rulings. They specifically deny the states claim of jurisdiction. However, the States continue in their...

Re: autopilot route plugin

Sean,

This looks very promising. Nicely done. Unfortunately I cannot test the plugin at this time. The boat is dockbound and I am homebound working on other things. To make matters worse, my Nexus...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

Again you are correct, Dave. As an addition to your astute observations and in the spirit of including our non-US membership, Federal Maritime law is largely based on international treaties going...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

I beg to differ my brother. There is a right to travel backed up by many supreme court rulings. Technically, under the law and according to Black's Legal Dictionary, a 'driver' is defined as 'for...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

"...boating, like driving, is a privilege, not a right." Citations please.

Is this your 'feelings' on the matter or can you back it up? I would like to know where you came upon this egregiously...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

Hi Mike,

"...a solution in search of a problem." Oh, that's hitting the nail on the head. I characterized it as hysteria. I believe it to be caused by squeaky wheel syndrome.

I'm sure you are...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

There are two words that always get my hackles up. The first one is 'required' and the second one is 'conglomerate'.

Whenever anything is legally required there is an accompanying bureaucracy...

Re: Should there be mandatory liability insurance for boats?

The majority of "the reasons why" in this ill-conceived conflation of ideas and issues are actually non-issues founded on false assumptions and a politically driven, left-leaning NPR diatribe. They...
