Re: Looking for brand recommendations for long range cruising motor yachts

The OP is looking for a boat capable of a circumnavigation, meaning thousands of miles of range. Not remotely possible in a Riva 48 or any twin engined planing powerboat.

Re: Catana 471 vendor hiding survey

I'd be a bit irritated if I were the OP - getting on a plane to see a boat is a pretty big commitment & a sign of seriousness in and of itself; forget about the cost, it's a huge amount of time &...

Re: Torqeedo Cruise 12.0 FP electric motor conversion

Thanks! So very roughly speaking, with 22kWh of batteries plus 10kWh of solar production, you could motor through the sunny part of the day at 6kts for ~5hrs, covering 30 nautical miles or so. Then...

Re: Torqeedo Cruise 12.0 FP electric motor conversion

Thanks! Cool video, looks like a very clean installation.

I'd also be curious about power consumption at 6kts. Unfortunately where I am it's hard to get anywhere you want to be under sail, at...

Re: Torqeedo Cruise 12.0 FP electric motor conversion

Cool! What's your cruising range vs speed? Would love more details of your setup & how it's performed in the real world.

Re: Broker or go it alone?

All of the boats on Yachtworld are through brokers - the point of a broker from the sell-side is to save the seller from the hassle of people contacting them directly about their boat.

You can...

Re: Best Whiskey

Nothing wrong with JD! Jim Beam is just for mixing tho IMHO.

I keep finding that with my Elijah Craig Small Batch - usually $20/bottle or so. Every time I get a fancy bottle I do a blind taste...

Re: Best Whiskey

In defense of whiskey/whisky vs. rum/rhum, it is totally possible to buy a $200 bottle of the latter.

I think there's good & bad versions of both at $10, $20, $30... beyond that they're usually...

Re: Best Whiskey

Elijah Craig small batch is very good bourbon & reasonably priced.

Rittenhouse Rye is the best for cocktails I find - peppery & cuts through. It does make a difference, depending on the drink....

Re: Seeking "Willy's Jeep" of Bluewater Monohulls

Even new boats are simple compared to modern cars though, assuming they're not laden down with tons of extra systems (HVAC, inverters, etc.) Something like a base spec Pogo 30 has very simple and...

Re: Seeking "Willy's Jeep" of Bluewater Monohulls

Interesting question. There's a difference between maintenance & refit. Replacing fuel and water tanks is not something that's regularly done - it may never need to be done if the tanks are...

Re: Oxnard/Ventura

When we were in SB this past summer the transient rates were pretty reasonable for SoCal (assuming availability) - this website says $1.50/ft which jives - it was $61.50/night for our 41-footer.

Re: Maine Cat 38

Thanks for this post - excellent. I've long been an admirer of both of these brands.

For those with either model & outboards, I'm curious about the outboards for those times when you've got to...

Re: San Diego to Catalina Route

Yeah last summer Avalon was nuts. Stay away during the weekends, and even Wed/Thurs I had some trouble. There's always space up at White's though, a few nm to the North.

It's a long slog up in...

Re: Endurance found after 100+ years

Here's another one: the Endurance was discovered March 5th, 2022, 100 years to the day after Shackleton was buried on March 5th, 1922.

Re: Endurance found after 100+ years

I think the $10m or so the expedition cost (donated anonymously) is better spent than, say, on the monthly maintenance for Andrey Melnichenko's monstrous Sailing Yacht A.

I had the same reaction...

Re: Induction Cooking and AC on DC

I think Sailing Uma shows pretty convincingly that electric propulsion is doable for a long-term cruiser with the right mindset. Also great for a lot of daysailers. Not great for coastal cruising...

Re: Pump in vented loop needed for direct to sea pee

We plumbed a small 12v pump and a valve from our pee tank to the sink drain. Vastly better than dumping pee into the sink. Fill the tank & when you're in a legal spot just open the valve & pump...

Re: Catching Fish while Sailing?

It really depends on the species. I suspect that most caught by sailboats dragging a line will be quite plentiful. There are lots of resources out there for determining the sustainability of the...

Re: Bhakdi/Burkhardt pathology results show 93% of people who died after being vaccin

My cousin-in-law and her husband have been infected by this anti-vax garbage. They have five kids, with the husband as sole breadwinner. They're in their early 40's, healthy and fit.

They both...

Re: Compost toilet installation through existing empty black tank?

I agree with Mike - I'd like to see a bigger vent if possible but you'd probably be okay. Or were you thinking of converting the deck pompout to a vent? That might work better than the tiny holding...

Re: Cruising on a classic sailboat (Choy Lee Robb 35)

I certainly understand that 400nm is possible in 7 days. The OP has only 2 weeks for the entire cruise, not just to get to the destination. Just wanted to make sure they know what they're getting...

Re: Cruising on a classic sailboat (Choy Lee Robb 35)

400nm in 1 week on either of those boats is pretty ambitious. Hell, that's ambitious for my 41' trawler. I'm not sure about those hull speed calculations - usually you motor under hull speed, maybe...

Re: Cruising on a classic sailboat (Choy Lee Robb 35)

Beautiful! People cruised these boats when they were new, no reason you can't do it now. The reason many gravitate to more modern designs is mostly that you get more interior space and waterline...
