Re: How do you get N2K AIS data from signal K into Navionics

Not disagreeing with your point re: price, but if all you are using SK for is N2K Ais to 0183 then a commercial solution is probably a better option anyway. If you have SK for other reasons already...

Re: How do you get N2K AIS data from signal K into Navionics

Many features available in Signal K server are developed as plugins, which undoubtedly adds complexity.

But getting N2K ais conversion to 0183 working requires just installing and activating the...

Re: How do you get N2K AIS data from signal K into Navionics

TL;DR: AIS is a special case, you need to install the
signalk-n2kais-to-nmea0183 plugin and activate it.

Longer: While the conversions in the signalk-to-nmea0183 plugin work by converting Signal...

Re: Possible to use tile server as chart source?

The links as such are not usable in a browser, but describe a map source/server that can be used with the correct x, y and z parameters to load map tiles.

Re: Paper white displays

They are limited not only by refresh rate but also by total number of refreshes. Friend’s diy depth (or wind, I forget) display died after one (short finnish) season.

So mind also that aspect....

Re: OCPN data sharing Focus Group

With O running on a computer in the nav station I would like to make use of route, waypoint and track information (including the current active track and its waypoint data) independent of what O...

Re: Interoperability between OpenCPN(s) & Devices

Lol, JSON over (web)socket is one core aspect of Signal K. In addition to navigation data like speeds and depths SK has also provisions for what we refer to as resources: waypoints: waypoints,...

Re: Actisense NMEA 2000 & Autopilot Issues with Raspberry Pi Open CPN

Oh right. OpenPlotter has its own utilities for configuring the connections and there it may very well be called like you recall. Signal K, OpenPlotter utilities and OpenCPN terminologies are not...

Re: Actisense NMEA 2000 & Autopilot Issues with Raspberry Pi Open CPN

I am quite late to the party, but as there is quite a bit of SK related confusion - I'll try to clear things up where and if I can.

SirChauncy: here's a rewrite of your original system description...

Re: In what cases is SignalK needed?

Sure, but there is no mechanism how my device would be able to understand what your device is sending. If you squint your eyes there is little difference between a custom PGN message and encrypted...

Re: In what cases is SignalK needed?

This is not correct. You can run SK and O on the same computer - this is what OpenPlotter is. Or maybe I am missing your exact point here?

Re: In what cases is SignalK needed?

I think this is a good question.

So why would I use Signal K and not just O? After all people have been using just O very successfully. So clearly it is not needed for the core O functionality.

Re: In what cases is SignalK needed?

Some corrections:
- this is not a delta message, it is the full representation
- a sensor can and probably should omit the vessel context (the sensor does not need to know the id of the vessel it...

Re: Interoperability between OpenCPN(s) & Devices

Please, let's not go to prog language pros and cons in this thread. I tried to make a point about interoperability and open APIs, that you can use from ANY programming language.

This thread has reiterated...

This would be valuable in general, not only for weather alerts. For example SK N2K connectivity maps N2K alarms to SK notifications and Victron Venus produces notifications.
