Re: Dodger Quotation

Thanks all for the replies. It does appear that $6K is the going price from a canvas shop that knows what they are doing. I checked several other threads, and it appears that in 2024, $6,000 is not...

Re: Dodger Quotation

By the way, I've got the frame, this is just canvas and isinglass. The old dodger is twelve years old (+) and really in rough shape.

Dodger Quotation

Hi All, not sure exactly where to post this, but here goes: I just got a quote from a reputable canvas shop in the southeast for a new dodger, and I almost fell out of my chair: $6,000!!

Does...

Re: Westerbeke W46 Replacement

I replaced my Westerbeke with a Beta. I love it. Service from Beta is outstanding, engine runs smoothly, it's all good.

Re: ICW: What does it really mean to "skip Georgia"

After nearly running aground at Doboy Inlet near Sapelo Island, I've avoided Georgia, choosing to go outside from Savannah to Amelia Island / Fernandina Beach. I draw 5.5 feet, by the way. It's...

Re: Pearson 365/367

I'm a 367 owner. Love the boat, and it is very seaworthy. I am in final stages of getting it ready to sail to South America in 2024-2025. Re-powered with Beta 35. I've replaced the fuel tank and...

Re: Bare feet on board

I am still sporting a black toenail on my big toe as a result of being barefoot on deck. I have a pair of boat shoes that stay on the boat; I take off my land shoes when I come aboard and put those...

Re: Composting head?

I've had a Nature's Head for seven years. Big step up from fixing the old traditional marine head. I would never go back.

Re: Hatteras

I just want to second the comment about how rough it can be coming out Beaufort Inlet at the wrong time. Did it once, wind against tide, and it was absolutely the worst ass-kicking I've ever gotten,...

Re: Anchor chain marking and weaving line vs. paint

I like S/V Jedi's approach to marking, i.e., fewer marks. But I would do 50, 100, and 150 feet. I currently have marks with cable ties every 30 feet, and that is too much.

Re: Hi all here's my plan!

The first time I crossed the Gulf Stream, I was nervous about it. NOAA missed the weather forecast in a big way, and my son and I ended up in a gale for 12 hours. But it was good in the long run,...

Re: Pros and Cons of folding props

I have a feathering prop - MaxProp - and I have a fixed prop as my spare. The boat also came with a spare folding prop, but I've never used it. The MaxProp is great and it makes a 3/4 knot...

Re: Grounded my boat

I've run aground four or five times in the ICW - twice in Florida, once in SC. In all cases, the chart said there should have been > 9 feet where I ran aground. In all cases, I ran aground in mud...

Re: [Repower advice] How much HP is enough? Tartan 42

I re-powered last year from Westerbeke 40 to Beta 35. The Beta is definitely more powerful than the Westerbeke, quieter, smoother, and more fuel efficient. I have a 17 inch MaxProp which moves the...

Re: Do I Really Need a Life Raft?

Exactly my thoughts, but try telling that to guests.....and one experienced sailor refused to go along as crew unless the raft's certification was current. So I bought a new one.

Re: Do I Really Need a Life Raft?

I finally bought a new life raft, but only because I was having difficulty getting crew because the old Avon was years out of certification. Since I carry a dinghy, I would always try to launch that...

Re: Survival challenge

Yup, +1. I learned to sail in Sunfish's, then Lasers, then O'Day 22, then Catalina 27, and now have my dream boat, for now, a 36.5 foot Pearson, which has 9,000 lbs of lead in the keel, so...

Re: Manual vs electric fuel lifting pump

One consideration on electric pumps is the specs of the engine the pump is feeding fuel to. In my case, I discovered that my Beta 35 has very specific restrictions on the pressure an electric pump...

Re: License for sailing my own boat

For exactly this reason, I finished ASA104 and got my ICC last year before sailing in Greek waters, but no one ever asked for my papers.

Re: Torqeedo on a Wharram 31'

I have a Torqeedo 1100, and I believe it generates more like 3HP. The concern I would have is if you have adverse wind or current, is 3HP enough? Also, the life of the battery is radically...

Re: Overly Strict Marina Rules? Or Am I Just New to "Premier" Marinas?

Is the marina in Florida, by any chance? I'm in a very nice marina in North Carolina, and there are no such rules, though about four years ago they kicked out all the liveaboards. My advice is,...

Re: BVI - Sailing trip

We've sailed BVI twice in the last 15 months, and your itinerary looks good. If you go to either Cooper Island or the Baths, arrive early to insure you get a mooring ball.
