Re: OpenCPN hardware from scratch.

I run OpenCPN on an older style HP ProBook which fits into my homemade helm.
I've replaced it once with the SSD version, think it was only $150.

Re: Yet another disaster at sea

Hats off again to the diligence of the USCG.
Last October, cruising down the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan at 2am, I got tangled up in a 1500ft long surface fishing net which stalled the boat and...

Re: The deadly Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race (1998)

Re: Typical Plan East Coast USA

The I-94 entry process is confusing and as an 'alien' I don't believe you can use the ROAM system.
Flying to the Bahamas/UK or wherever is ok and I agree with previous posters that you should carry...

Re: Typical Plan East Coast USA

A B1/B2 visa will normally only give you US entry for 6 months. On arrival, you'll be issued with an I94 Immigration Record.
Canada is not an option for a different Country to visit to hopefully...

Re: Sell house, buy boat or vice versa?

Sell the house, furniture, cars - don't put anything in storage and buy a reasonable RV to cross to the East Coast. Stay and use that to boat shop, then sell it when you find one.
RV living will...

Re: Opinion choice between two cats

I'm so glad you didn't listen to all the bs.
The owners version will be the most comfortable and 75hp engines (presumably Yanmars) will suit you well.

Re: Getting a boat in Florida for winter, is that crazy?

Hurricane season/summer storage - plenty spots to leave a boat on the hard - power required to run a dehumidifier.
Slips in winter season - Getting expensive and scarce.
Anchorages - many many....

Re: Cruising and boat maintenance costs

Come on over to the "Dark Side". I have a 40 year old trawler, averaging over 6,000miles/yr. My maintenance costs are much less than the original posters, I consider mine to be well maintained, but...

Re: What would you do with a (pretty) good running 29 Year old Diesel?

Biggest risk to any marine diesel is overheating. Changing the raw water pump impeller regularly is a must, but so is examining the internals of the pump for any wear. Wear can result in a loss of...

Re: Cruising Long Island Sound

Buying the 2022 Eldridge Tide & Pilot book should be Priority 1 - to gain maximum current benefit.
Short Day 1 - anchor in the Thimble Islands adjacent to Branford - buoyed and plenty depth.
Day 2...

Re: Trying to get my AIS to OpenCPN

Thanks for your continued help.
I will attempt to change to 0183 - but this will be a challenge for my Abacus-minded brain.
May take me a while.

Re: Trying to get my AIS to OpenCPN

That is the gateway device and at present it is factory set to 'auto' which should read 0183.
I have disabled Comm5 - originally thought this was the correct port.

Trying to get my AIS to OpenCPN

I love OpenCPN and have it opened on a laptop at the helm next to a small Simrad NSS Evo2.
Simrad shows all AIS targets as normal.
I installed a Yacht Devices dongle to the backbone and it's...

Re: Refinishing caprail in oil or cetol

Don't use oil for all the reasons stated and ruining clothes if you rub against or sit on.
The ultimate finish for me is Epifanes varnish (10 coats), sanding between each coat with 220. Varnish, for...
