Re: Coppercoat, or not?

This is my understandng of copper coat's performance is that you'll get soft growth that will need to be regularly scraped, but not hard growth. Soft growth doesn't bother me very much, and when...

Re: Coppercoat, or not?

Yeah the more I think about it the more it might sense for us to go up to Santa Cruz instead.

I had figured all 3 boatyards around here would have the same policies (mainly regarding paint...

Coppercoat, or not?

We're hauling out soon, and want to put on copper coat so we don't have to worry as much about re-painting when we're cruising. Unfortunately there are a few things that make that more annoying than...

Re: Docking long keel/heavy displacement yachts.

A lot of good advice given here, and you're not alone in your struggles. It took us a while to figure out how to best dock/undock our Westsail, and early on, every outing was very stressful as a...

Re: Putting a slight bend in 1" SS Tubing

Well, I tried to find a muffler shop to bend these tubes, but came up empty handed. It doesn't really help that I usually don't have time during the week, when more of them are open, to get out to...

Re: Choosing a gateway ?

I thought about rolling a DIY solution for this for a long time to save some money, but ended up just forking over the $$ for the Yacht Devices YDWG-02 gateway. It really couldn't be easier to setup...

Re: Filling/repairing small gouges in hull

IF it's an encapsulated keel and that's glass under those chips, then it might be the gelcoat that chipped, in which case you should check for delamination nearby, but otherwise can fix by gridding...

Re: First Principles For A New User

I am pretty tech savvy and have also found OpenCPN to have a high learning curve, depending on what you are trying to do.

However, I would keep in mind that OpenCPN brings to the table what a...

Re: Putting a slight bend in 1" SS Tubing

I think you're looking at the wrong bend. I'm just talking about the bend at the center of the dodger in the photo I attached. It's maybe 20 degrees max.

Re: Putting a slight bend in 1" SS Tubing

Not sure if you saw the photo in the original post, but basically there will be a single bend in the middle to accommodate the arc of the dodger. That will leave 2 straight segments on either side of...

Re: Moorage LA area

I'm not sure about moorings, but there are very affordable slips in the Wilmington area of LA harbor. Your not conveniently located when you want to go sail (since you'll spend 45 minutes just...

Re: Go small and go now?

Absolutely go small, go now. If you're going to wait another year, don't take the extra money to buy a bigger boat, use it to cruise longer. That's my opinion at least.

Also, make sure you're...

Re: How Many "Blue Water Cruisers" are There

If true, I think it's too bad that people feel they need a big expensive boat to go cruising. It can be done very affordably if you're willing to forego the luxuries a larger boat brings to the...

Re: How Many "Blue Water Cruisers" are There

While it's true that wealth accumulation accelerates in middle age, it's also true that at 30, Boomers had considerably more wealth already accumulated than Millenial's at 30. As a share of national...

Re: How Many "Blue Water Cruisers" are There

I'm not sure how many are out there world-cruising at any one time, but I suspect the number is increasing, not decreasing. For one, I think the advent of sailing youtube channels has popularized the...

Re: Shading, Serial vs. Parallel, this time with data

Victron also provides a VenusOS image for free that you can load onto a raspberry pi and basically get the functionality of CerboGX, which does all this as Jedi mentioned. I use VE.Direct-to-USB...

Re: Are Solar Mats usable on a yacht?

I agree that you'll have a better experience putting rigid glass solar panels on an arch, off a rigid cross pole between stantions (depending on your stantions), or on a dodger.

I've also been...

Re: Shading, Serial vs. Parallel, this time with data

This is a great question and actually the reason I did the testing, as I'm trying to figure out how I should wire up the panels on our dodger that will be under the boom (see photo). To that end, I...

Sanding bottom paint off

Note: This is not a discussion about the best way to remove bottom paint, it's a discussion about the least-painful way to remove bottom paint with vacuum sanders.

The boatyards around where we...

Shading, Serial vs. Parallel, this time with data

There are many discussions on this forum and elsewhere about the merits of serial vs. parallel solar panels when it comes to mitigating effects of partial shading (e.g. boom, rigging,...

Re: Too much solar on this arch?

My understanding from other discussions here and elsewhere, is that if your panels have bypass didoes, which pretty much all modern panels do, then you're better off putting them in series to...

Re: Too much solar on this arch?

I'm putting the 2 50W and 2 100W panels into separate series strings, and those two series strings will be fed to two separate MPPT controllers. Doing things in series to reduce impacts of partial...

Re: Too much solar on this arch?

Here's the layout for how the panels on the dodger are going to look. The larger panels are 100W, and the smaller ones are 50W. Total of 350W on the dodger. Just ordered some tubing and should be...

Re: How are people charging Li/LA hybrid setups?

Haha I definitely laughed at that one.

I am by my nature someone that likes to automate things and make them as hands-off as possible with upfront effort. Sometimes this pans out, often it leads...
