So with a leak in the hot water tank heat exchanger, I could be forcing fresh water into the engine cooling system.

Our accumulator is vertically oriented with a bike tube valve on top. In the past when the pump started to short cycle I pumped air into the accumulator with a bicycle pump which solved the problem....

The heat exchanger was cleaned and pressure tested 500 hrs ago. The engine starts to lug before it warms up so I'm not sure about heat being the root problem.
